Robinson Crusoe: Film Review – Kids Will Love It

Verdict: Cute, funny, pleasant – everything a kids' movie should be.

Animated movies are not just for children anymore. Take the latest ones – Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, Kung Fu Panda 3, Finding Dory, The Angry Birds Movie – they were all enjoyed by children and adults alike. The same may not be said for the latest animated comedy film, Robinson Crusoe. This movie was made especially for children, and will be enjoyed by them only. If you happen to be a chaperone for children in theatres, you are going to have to deal with this for 90 minutes. Don’t fret, it’s not a bad film. But it’s not going to make you ROTFL either. Robinson Crusoe is sweet, pleasant, and will take you back to your own childhood kiddy movies. An added perk? Pirates!

Robinson Crusoe is loosely based on the famous novel by Daniel Defoe. A ship of pirates spot an unconscious Crusoe on a lonely island and rescue him. When he gains consciousness, he retells the story of how he came to be on the island. But we do not get to hear Crusoe’s story. A parrot, whom Crusoe calls Tuesday, is aboard the pirate ship and tells us the real story of Robinson Crusoe. Crusoe and his dog, Aynsley, were shipwrecked and while the other sailors got away, the duo were stranded on the island. This little island was inhabited by a group of cheerful friends – Mak the Parrot (also Tuesday), Kiki the Kingfisher, Rosie the Tapir, Epi the Echidna, Pango the Pangolin, Scrubby the Goat, and Carmello the Chameleon. Wary of Crusoe and the dog, the animals observe them from afar. But they do not know that they are being observed too! Two evil cats, May and Mal, are on the island too, and they plan to take over it, by getting rid of the others.

Robinson Crusoe still - BookMyShow

Like a typical kids’ movie, Robinson Crusoe is fairly black and white. Crusoe and Tuesday/Mak are the heroes, sharing a special bond with the other animals – the other good guys. The cats are the bad guys, and will stop at nothing to get what they want. At the end of the day, it’s a hero’s victory. There are not many surprise elements or gimmicks either. What makes this movie adorable is the compatibility between the friends. They stay together, work together, eat together and fight together. No matter what, they are there for each other. That’s the takeaway kids shall be getting from this film. Some characters are funny, while some are relatable. The pirates are hilarious, and their pirate-like accent and behavior make a great addition to the otherwise sober narrative. The animation is a simple 3D; there are no added effects that are intended to amaze you.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Miss the childlike innocence of animated movies? Catch this one then! The cute and cuddly animals will make you go ‘aww’, and the end will leave you with pleasant feelings.
