The Finest Hours: Film Review – An Awe-Inspiring True Story

Verdict: An ode to the unsung heroes.

It’s not unusual to see films where the hero swoops in and single-handedly rescues people in distress. It is, however, uncommon to see a film that acknowledges the hard work put in by authorities during difficult times. The Finest Hours is one of those rare gems.

Set in 1952, The Finest Hours takes us back to one of the most ghastly storms to ever hit the USA. The storm claims its first victim in the form of an oil tanker, which is broken into half because of the disaster. Four members of the Coast Guard, led by Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), are forced to face the fury of Mother Nature as they set out to rescue the crew. This is followed by two epic battles of survival, battles that are led by seemingly ordinary men – Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) in the tanker and Webber in the lifeboat; battles that have gone down in history as anything but ordinary.

The Finest Hours is a gripping story that beautifully explores the need for survival. It offers a no-holds-barred look at the psyche of men struggling to survive. But that’s not all. The film also explores the effect of these heroes’ actions on the people in their lives, and the people whose lives they touch indirectly.

The fantastic visuals help bring the story to life in a realistic fashion. Each frame, even if it’s one that focuses on massive destruction, is aesthetically pleasing. It goes without saying that The Finest Hours also makes great use of 3D, and for that alone, it deserves a watch.

But that’s not the only reason to watch the film. It also features understated yet strong performances by Chris Pine and Casey Affleck. The actors are remarkable as reluctant heroes who refuse to give up. They make you root for them, even when you might be inclined to do the opposite. Members of the supporting cast are also noteworthy, though they aren’t always given a lot to work with. Eric Bana, Beau Knapp and Holliday Grainger stand out in their respective performances.

All things considered, the film makes for a good watch. Ironically, the only thing that holds the movie back from being memorable is that the plot plays things too safe. Still, the film is entertaining, even if you might not write home about it.

Why You Should Watch this Movie:
If you’re looking to enjoy a film that features breathtaking visuals and remarkable performances, The Finest Hours is your best bet this weekend. Don’t miss this inspiring true story, which pays homage to the unsung heroes.

Audiences Hail Karnan As A Masterpiece In Tamil Cinema

It’s finally here! ‘Karnan‘ starring Dhanush and directed by Mari Selvaraj has hit the theatres today. Touted to be one of biggest social dramas of the year, the film has been gaining much hype with its poster releases, music videos and the powerful trailer. Karnan also stars Malayalam actor Rajisha Vijaya who makes her Tamil debut with this film, alongside other actors such as Lakshmipriya Chandramouli, Gouri Kishen, Lal, and Yogi Babu in important roles. The cinematography has been handled by Theni Easwaran. Mari Selvaraj gained huge prominence for his grating caste drama ‘Pariyerum Perumal‘ which stunned audiences and critics for its open narration of the horror of the caste divide in society. This time around, the director once again sets the story in the rural milieu with Dhanush playing the titular role and a saviour-like figure of the masses. The audiences have spoken and the reviews are nothing short of stupendous.
