When you think of animated characters mixed with live-action actors, one of the movies that comes to your mind is Space Jam. Tom & Jerry is not unlike that movie. It takes your favourite childhood characters in their original form and spins a story that will make you laugh and cry. Tom & Jerry’s rivalry has followed them to New York City where Tom wants to become a popular pianist and Jerry is just looking to relocate. A chance encounter in Central Park leads them to The Royal Gate Hotel that is hosting the biggest event of the year, a big Indian wedding. Elsewhere, Kayla (Chloë Grace Moretz) who is looking for a job finds herself at The Royal Gate Hotel using a fake resume to get the job as the event planner of the wedding. When Jerry’s presence is noticed by the head chef played by Ken Jeong, it is time for Tom to step up and fulfill his destiny of capturing Jerry.
The duo are still upto no good
We have seen Tom & Jerry fight since we were kids and if you think you have probably seen all the moves they had to offer, you are wrong. In this movie, they bring their old moves back like the Tom holding his tail instead of Jerry or the ol’ window on the fingers. At the same time, you should be excited to see some new moves that will make you giggle or flinch depending on which side you have chosen.
Special mention to the actors
It must not be easy to act with puppets on set in place of the animation that we see on screen but we have to thank Michael Peña and Chloë Grace Moretz to make it more believable. We do notice actors looking awkward on-screen when interacting with animated objects but you see none of that in this movie.
Say hello to some old characters
While Tom & Jerry are the heroes of the movie, we do get to see some more characters from their universe like Spike and Toodles. We even meet the scary alley cats who terrorize both Tom and Jerry. Even Droopy has a blink-and-miss appearance. You will definitely have fun looking for these characters on screen.
WATCH OR NOT:
While Tom & Jerry are the stars of the movie, the movie also has a story that makes you leave the theatres happy. If you were fond of the 10-year-old you, you should definitely not miss this movie in theatres.
