Verdict: Angrezi Medium is a two-and-a-half-hour comedy sketch by Irrfan Khan & Deepak Dobriyal.
Saket Chaudhary’s Hindi Medium (2017) was a surprise winner that received a lot of acclaim for its subject, witty comedy, and of course, the stellar performances by Irrfan Khan, Saba Qamar, and Deepak Dobriyal. After its grand success, Bollywood was rocked by the news of Khan’s illness that would keep him away from the silver screen for a long time. It wasn’t even certain if he would return and when news got out that Hindi Medium would have a sequel and Irrfan himself would be starring in it, there was finally a glimmer of hope. Three years later, the sequel finally makes its much-awaited release with a brand new cast barring the comedic duo of Irrfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal. Angrezi Medium, which is a perfect stand-alone film, is directed by Bollywood biggie Homi Adajania and has been co-produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films.
What’s Angrezi Medium About:
Champak Bansal (Irrfan Khan) is a single father to Tarika (Radhika Madan) who wishes to study in London. Despite her hard efforts, she fails to secure a seat, especially after her father ruins her chances by exposing the corruption of the school principal’s husband. But Champak is determined to fulfill his daughter’s dreams and along with his brother Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal), he flies to London to secure citizenship by investing in his friend Babloo’s (Ranvir Shorey) business. But Babloo cheats them and the duo are deported back to India due to a misunderstanding while Tarika is stranded in London. Champak and Gopi figure another way to make it back to the Home of the Big Ben but now police officer Naina (Kareena Kapoor Khan) is on their trail. Meanwhile, Champak cannot come to terms with losing Tarika who only wants a little bit of freedom from her father and his crazy antics.
From the trailer itself, it was obvious that Angrezi Medium was going to be a two-man show. But the movie is so much more than that. Sure, Irrfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal are given the full two and a half hours of screen time to shine and they turn this movie into their own comedy show. The actors bring out their best and are free to do as they like, which is a bonus for not only their fans but also for comedy lovers. The love-hate relationship between the brothers makes for an entertaining watch and the duo makes you double up with laughter at their sarcastic and animated humor. Adding to their craziness are Kiku Sharda, Ranvir Shorey, and Pankaj Tripathi who individually act as the ‘third brother’ in various scenes. These actors fit in well with the comedic duo and their scenes together are the biggest highlights of Angrezi Medium.
While comedy is the film’s biggest strength, there are also plenty of emotional moments, especially between Irrfan Khan and Radhika Madan. The actress gives a fine performance as a teenager who is unsure about her future and the light-hearted moments between the father and daughter make you chuckle and tear up at the same time. Dimple Kapadia also makes a stark impact in her limited performance and her general absence from the silver screen is sorely felt.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The storyline of Angrezi Medium is not linear and falls all over the place with its smaller sub-plots. There too much madness in every scene to take this movie seriously. While Hindi Medium raised some significant concerns about the attitudes towards education in India, the message in Angrezi Medium is not clear. Kareena Kapoor is given very little screen time and her appearances feel random and bizarre, especially since she is a police officer who seems to be dressed like she’s at Coachella. This movie will mainly appeal to filmgoers of the higher age category as it regularly delves into the theme of self-victimization by parents that leads to clashes with their children.
Why You Should Watch:
Angrezi Medium gives you non-stop entertainment with its classic style of filmy comedy and stellar performances by Bollywood’s biggest comedians. Irrfan Khan makes a magnificent comeback in a role that is meant for him and Deepak Dobriyal perfectly complements him with the comedy. Watch for an entertaining two and a half hours and double up with laughter as the comedy duo takes you on a crazy trip around the world.
