Bajirao Mastani: Film Review – Magic on Screen

Verdict: A masterpiece on love and war.

No Indian filmmaker is as indulgent as Sanjay Leela Bhansali. If you thought he couldn’t outdo Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, you’re in for a surprise with Bajirao Mastani. It’s his most ambitious project with the director having planned the movie a decade back. Casting his Ram and Leela, Bhansali has given us one of the most beautiful films in recent times.

Based on the book Rau, Bajirao Mastani tells the story of Peshwa Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) and his second wife, Mastani (Deepika Padukone). Bajirao, who is married to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) falls for Mastani while helping her kingdom in a battle. The repercussions of this relationship are huge as everyone including his mother, Radhabai (Tanvi Azmi) and brother, Chimaji Appa (Vaibbhav Tatwawdi) are against it.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done a brilliant job here. Every scene is shot with precision and he immerses you into the world he has created. The director leaves his signature stamp in every scene and stands a good chance of picking up a few awards for this magnum opus. Bhansali also is the one responsible for the music of the film, which while aren’t particularly the best thing you will hear, the picturization of each song is superb. Deewani Mastani stands out as the sets look exquisite and Deepika’s dance will leave you spellbound. With Pinga, Bhansali tries to recreate Dola Re Dola fromDevdas and even fairly manages to do so. A special shoutout to Anju Modi who has designed the outfits for the lead cast.

Talking about the lead cast: the actors are in fine form. Ranveer Singh sinks his teeth into the character and is the pick of the lot. From the strut to the accent, he gets everything right. This performance will definitely give the actor an edge over his contemporaries. There is little fault you can find with Deepika’s performance. The actress has hit a purple patch and just seems to be getting better with every film. She mesmerizes the audience as Mastani. Her eyes do the talking and she looks absolutely graceful in those traditional outfits. Priyanka Chopra has a smaller role than Deepika but makes every minute of her time on screen count. She makes you feel for Kashi, a woman who loves her husband and hasn’t come to terms with his infidelity. The supporting cast, which includes Tanvi Azmi, Milind Soman and Mahesh Manjrekar are top notch too.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

From intense war scenes to sweet romantic exchanges, Bajirao Mastani will keep you engrossed till the very end. The actors are a delight to watch and make the movie even more enjoyable. This weekend, do yourself a favor — go watch Bajirao Mastani. It’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s best work till date.
