Coffee With D: Film Review – A Brave Effort

Coffee With D: Film Review – A Brave Effort

By Sonakshi Kurbah20 January, 2017 2 min read

Verdict: An interesting plot that could have been so much more.

Vishal Mishra's latest outing Coffee With D, starring Sunil Grover, Zakir Hussain, Rajesh Sharma, Dipannita Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi, is a film that is a satire supposed to mock the state of news channels.

Arnab “Mr. Angry Pants” Ghosh (Sunil Grover), is a table-thumping journalist who has been removed from his slot and relegated to a less important slot – a cookery show, despite having generated high TRPs. This is because his boss, Roy (played by Rajesh Sharma), is not amused by his antics.

This leaves Arnab disturbed, after which his pregnant, Crime Patrol-obsessed wife, Parull (Anjana Sukhani), suggests that he interviews the most dreaded, Sylvester “Stolen”-loving, gram-panchayat (Instagram)-obsessed, D (Zakir Hussain). Arnab, who initially finds this idea bizarre, decides to pitch it to Roy, the Chief Editor of his channel. Initially hesitant, Roy eventually approves of it.

To get D's attention, Arnab decides to publish false news surrounding the don's personal life. These posts go viral and become instrumental in getting Arnab the interview he wished for. All hell breaks loose when Arnab sets out with the fashion writer Neha (Dipannita Sharma), and a two-man crew to get the interview.

In the first half, Arnab's setting out to post false news helps build momentum up to the interview with D, which then makes up for the rest of the film. Besides, having dialogues that are well thought out and clever, the film also has performances that shine.

Sunil Grover, who is otherwise known for his acts in popular TV shows, makes it rather unsettling for the audience to see him play a role this serious initially. He, however, does not disappoint for most part of the film. Zakir Hussain, too, delivers a mindblowing performance as D. It is Pankaj Tripathi who plays D's right-hand man that steals the show with his spot-on comic timing, making us wish we saw more of him.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
If you love Sunil Grover and Pankaj Tripathi and wish to enjoy a light, sans song and dance flick this weekend, this one is for you!
