Daawat-E-Ishq: Film Review – Age-old recipe with a contemporary fusion

Daawat-E-Ishq: Film Review – Age-old recipe with a contemporary fusion

By Teena Elizabeth Chacko19 September, 2014 2 min read

There have been very few love stories from the kitchens of Bollywood. When zaikedaar food comes together with a heart-warming story, we get the perfect foodie film. And in India, food and films go hand-in-hand. But Daawat-e-Ishq can’t be termed as the best gastronomic-cum-cinematic dabba you ever had.

Daawat-e-Ishq is the khatti-meethi love story of Hyderabad-ki-Shehzadi, Gulrez and Lucknow-ka-Nawab, Tariq. The sweet love story brings to the limelight a social issue – Dowry.

Gulrez ‘Gullu’ Qadir (Parineeti Chopra) is a shoe sales girl who dreams to be a famous shoe designer. Her bhooji (father), Abdul Qadir (Anupam Kher), is a court clerk. Unfortunately, even after seeking several alliances, he is unable to get his daughter married. The sole reason – greedy dowry-seeking men and their families. Fed up with the insults and humiliation, Gulrez decides to turn the tables around. Together the father-daughter duo search for the greediest suitor and trap him under Section 498A. And it is during this quest, Gulrez meets Tariq ‘Taru’ Haider (Aditya Roy Kapur). Unlike other men, he is a Lucknowi cook who just wants love from his future bride. Will Gullu be able to reciprocate Taru’s love for her or does destiny has something else in store of them? Watch Daawat-e-Ishq to find out.

National-award winning director, Habib Faisal adds all the available ingredients to make a yummy feast for his audience. But, does he have the right ingredients?

Director Habib has an appealing star cast along with enticing locations to start the ‘Feast of Love’. He starts with serving us a feisty Hyderabadi girl, Gulrez along with her bhooji, Abdul Qadir. Thereafter, he serves us with Lucknowi Tariq. All the three characters were simply amazing. Parineeti Chopra and Anupam Kher portrayed a beautiful father-daughter relationship. It came together like the perfect Hyderabadi biryani. Aditya Roy Kapur came across as the delicious Lucknowi tangadi kebab. While Parineeti was absolutely charming, Aditya’s appearance and dialect needed more work. Making his debut, Karan Wahi is natural with his character- the sweet chocolate boy.

Moving on to the main course, the sweet-sour love story which has a social message. This is definitely the need of the hour. But unfortunately, the plot was half-baked making the feast a little disheartening, especially after these delicious starters. Though the movie runs a little over 2 hours, but it was delightful in bits and pieces. Had the first half been planned well, the climax could have been far better, making Daawat-e-Ishq indeed the perfect feast. The food element is kept to a minimum, this might leave you disappointed. But the grey shades added to Gulrez’s character gives a hint of spice to the otherwise bland main course.

No feast is complete without a yummy dessert. The delightful songs are the best desserts to end the grand, Daawat-e-Ishq. Each song will definitely work their way into your playlist. Our must-try recommendation: Daawat-e-Ishq title track, Shayarana and Mannat. Parineeti and Aditya’s onscreen chemistry is like the lajawaab jalebi that you must not miss.

Daawat-e-Ishq is a scrumptious recipe of love. It will satisfy your hunger for love. But fulfilling your desire for food? A little doubtful.

Why should you watch this film?

Garnished with love, fun, colorful settings and impressive performances, chef Habib prepares a grand fiesta – Daawat-e-Ishq . And if a sweet love story is your cup of tea, then don’t miss this treat.
