Dream Girl: Film Review – The Hero Becomes The Heroine

Verdict: Ayushmann delivers yet again in this hatke comedy of errors.

In 2018, Bollywood’s off-beat hero Ayushmann Khurrana took over the box office with two back-to-back hits Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho. The fan favorite actor returned this year with another blockbuster Article 15 that won audiences over with its socio-political message. Ayushmann is returning to the big screen now, this time as the hero as well as the heroine in Dream Girl.

What’s Dream Girl About:

Ever since he was a kid, Karamvir Singh (Ayushmann Khurrana) has had a very unique talent. Blessed with the gift of being able to mimic a woman’s voice, he grows up to use it for more than just getting his best friend Smiley (Manjot Singh) out of trouble. Karam is adored by people in his locality for playing the roles of Radha and Sita in local plays. Educated and jobless, he begins to look for a better solution to the debt he and his father (Annu Kapoor) are in. That’s how he begins working at a friendship call center with a whole slew of loyal clients who admire the charming voice and friendly chatter of his female alter-ego Pooja. However, things start to get out of hand as these clients fall head over heels in love with her. Karamvir finds himself caught between living a normal life with his now-fiance (Nushrat Bharucha) and dodging proposals from Pooja’s admirers.

What Works:

Like any Ayushmann Khurrana starter, Dream Girl takes an out-of-the-box premise and rolls with it. The story and screenplay by Nirmaan D. Singh and director Raaj Shaandilyaa take this concept into bizarre escalations where all the punchlines land. With plenty of hilarious quirks and weird antics, Shaandilyaa manages to hold your attention and put a smile on your face throughout the film.

The comedy in Dream Girl comes out through its characters with Annu Kapoor as a widowed father who’s in love, Vijay Raaz and a Haryanvi cop-cum-shayar, Abhishek Banerjee as a lovelorn music lover, Nidhi Bisht as a man-hating magazine owner, and Raj Bhansali as a Haryanavi wild child. Each of these characters come from some sort of desperation for companionship and when they find that in Ayushmann’s Pooja they instantly fall in love. In that aspect, the film brings out the real and relevant point of how loneliness is so widespread in the modern world.

It does have some rough patches but, in the end, Dream Girl is a crisp comedy of errors that sets out only to make you laugh and delivers. As the hero and heroine of the show, Ayushmann Khurrana once again proves to us why he is a talented force to be reckoned with.

What Could’ve Been Better:

Nushrat Bharucha‘s role as Ayushmann’s love interest in Dream Girl is underexplored, making her appearance seem like more of a cameo. Meanwhile, the film’s plot doesn’t go much deeper than the unique premise but it ends up being good enough for a laugh-worthy entertainer.

Why You Should Watch:

Led by Ayushmann Khurrana, the whole cast will keep you thoroughly entertained. Watch Dream Girl to enjoy a laughter ride that is packed with entertaining characters that deliver non-stop comic punches.
