Drishyam: Film Review – A gut-wrenching thriller

By Karan Raikar31 July, 2015 2 min read

When you look at Nishikant Kamat’s track record as a director, you’ll see that he hasn’t gone wrong yet with the films he makes. They’re all real, they’re a little gritty and all in all, they’re fine examples of film-making. Drishyam is no different.

The film follows the story of an orphaned man, Vijay Salgaonkar (a commendable Ajay Devgn) who owns a cable business in rural Goa. A school dropout, Vijay is a simple man. He has a wife, two lovely daughters and a happy life. All Vijay cares about is his family, living a simple and honest life, and films. He has an odd penchant for cinema, and usually ends up staying late at the office just so he can binge-watch movies.

His wife, Nandini (played by Shriya Saran), is a simpleton as well, but always wants the world for her daughters. Everything is rosy, until one fine day, something changes their lives forever. In what is a bizarre turn of events, a young boy comes to the Salgaonkar household, and vanishes without a trace. It turns out that he is the son of the Inspector-General (played by Tabu), and now the Salgaonkars must save themselves from the approaching storm.

Drishyam is a cinematic gem. It’s paced well; it spends time setting up the events of the story and nothing feels rushed or shoddy. Nishikant Kamat proves his mettle as a filmmaker, giving us a film that grabs you by the gut, and pulls you in for a sweet ride. His vision is perfectly executed by his cast (Tabu, sublime as always, and an admirable Rajat Kapoor), who deliver each scene with honesty and conviction.

However, what makes Drishyam the film you have to watch is not the excellent camerawork, or the background score, but rather the story. Written by Jeetu Joseph, the plot is what keeps you engaged, keeping you hooked from the very beginning, and finally throwing you off with the climax. Take our word for it- the ending will have you foaming at the mouth.

Why Should You Watch this Film?

Drishyam is everything a Bollywood film should be – smart, hard-hitting and story-driven. It’s a must-watch, especially if you enjoy suspense films!
