Gabbar is Back: Film Review – An entertaining fight against corruption

After the success of his previous hit ‘Baby’, Akshay Kumar takes his justice seeker streak forward in Gabbar is Back. The film is the remake of Tamil film Ramanaa. The movie’s opening credits roll to Akshay mouthing the famous dialogue ‘Kitne Aadmi the?’ This ensures one thing, that the film will stay true to its title. Gabbar is Back is the story of how Aditya (Akshay Kumar) turns into a professor by day and vigilante by night, taking up a fight against corruption at multiple levels. Aditya meets Shruti (Shruti Hassan) in a chance encounter and soon they fall in love. Suman Talwar plays Digvijay Patil, a corrupt businessman who refers to himself as not just a name, but a ‘brand’. Aditya instills fear in the minds of corrupt government officials by killing them and hanging their bodies at a public place. He keeps his identity a secret, and uses the name Gabbar to carry on his operations with a group of his students. On one of the similar occasions, he exposes Digvijay Patil’s son, who owns a hospital. The public outrage against Patil’s son result into the his death, which has Digvijay seek Aditya’s life with revenge on his mind. This is no barrier to Gabbar’s anti corruption activities and his antics soon make him a star among the masses.

The story further unfolds, giving us a glimpse of both Digvijay and Aditya’s past lives,  how animosity between the two dates back to years and how Shruti helps Aditya reach his mission. With the high amount of action movie, Akshay once again reassures that he is the original "Khiladi" of Bollywood. The movie has bashed-up goons, blood and humans that fly across miles in the air with a single kick. Revamped versions of the original Gabbar dialogues from Sholay keep things light, and also expose Kumar’s comic timing. Shruti Hassan’s character in the movie looks forced and even her acting fails to impress. Suman stays true to his character at all times and stands his ground even with Akshay hogging a major part of the limelight, when it comes to screen space. Sunil Grover in the role of a Police constable moves away from his comic image and plays a strong and serious role, proving once again that he is a brilliant actor. Kareena Kapoor Khan, the ‘not-so-surprise’ element in the film has a very small yet pivotal role. She fits her part perfectly and looks every inch the gorgeousness that she is. The Chitrangada Singh dance number ‘Aao Raja’ looks fantastic and is placed at a perfect time in the movie. Music in the movie is quite forgettable. It is just Honey Singh’s Aao Raja that stays on for a while in the audiences minds.

Why should you watch in this film?

Gabbar is Back is an action-packed film which has Akshay Kumar doing what he does best. Catch the movie to check out his all new action avatar and also to get an idea about how corruption is rotting various systems in our country, be it the government or the health industry.
