Gunday: Film Review

Gunday explodes onto the big screen. And what a film it is. With strong characters and a story filled with twists and turns, this movie takes us on an adventure. Directed by  Ali Abbas Zafar, the film is about two guys whose friendship is put to the test. As the story unfolds we are shown this world of crime and the rise of Bikram and Bala, played by Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Their Bromance is fun to watch. Irrfan does a remarkable job. Ranveer and Arjun do not disappoint. Priyanka Chopra plays her part well. With catchy tunes and a good story, this movie should not be missed.

Set in the 1970’s Calcutta, the story revolves around two friends, Bikram and Bala. Their story of hardship touches a chord. As they struggle to make their way in a brave new world, they face difficult choices. Bikram has the brains and Bala has the temper. Together, they set out to make their fortune. As time goes by, they rise up in the ranks of the criminal world. Soon, the whole of Calcutta swears by their friendship. They are as benevolent as they are ruthless. The both of them try to use their wits and strengths to turn their criminal past into an honest future. This makes them a target for the Law. In walks Inspector Satya (played by Irrfan Khan), a man determined to bring the two of them to justice. Thus begins the game of cat and mouse. Thrown into this mix is Nandita ( Priyanka Chopra), a cabaret dancer. She beguiles and charms our two heroes. Our heroes don’t stand a chance, they soon fall under her spell. Their friendship was the only thing that they had. She makes them choose between their bond and her. If you are expecting a classic love triangle, beware, you will be mistaken. Be prepared for an adventure.

The movie is a riot of color, fun, adventure and friendship. Ali Abbas Zafar brings a fresh breath to the Bollywood buddy film genre. Ranveer Singh’s and Arjun Kapoor’s on-screen chemistry makes this film fun to watch. As the film progresses, we get to see the change in each of their characters. In the end, the audience will root for both of them.  Priyanka Chopra delivers a decent performance. As the inspector who is chasing after Bikram and Bala, Irrfan Khan makes his presence known. The use of color and the city of Calcutta, makes the ’70s come alive. The music is well done and so is its use in the course of the story.

Why should you watch this film?
This is a buddy-movie hearkening back to the days of Old Bollywood. Ranveer Singh and Arjun deliver stellar performances. In fact, of the two, Arjun pips Ranveer to the post. Irrfan Khan’s work is nuanced and layered. He makes the role of hard-cop look easy. Priyanka Chopra raises the temperature whenever she is on-screen. The story has the standard twists and turns, also a few unexpected ones. In the end, it is about the bond of friendship which has been forged and tempered in tough times.
