Hamari Adhuri Kahani: Film Review- Of flowers and friendzone

Kaun hai yeh banjaran? Says an utterly confused mother of Aarav (Emraan Hashmi) to Vasudha (Vidya Balan). And people in the theatre burst into peals of laughter. No, we were not watching a comedy, just another Mohit Suri film. No offence meant.

With powerhouse performers like Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi and Rajkummar Rao, Hamari Adhuri Kahani promises to be an emotional drama that touches the soul. But instead it tickles our funny bone, which of course is unintentional.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani traces the story of Vasudha, a young mother, who is abandoned by her husband, Hari (Rajkummar Rao). Financially and emotionally not secure, Vasudha manages to lead a normal life with her job as a florist in a hotel. However, things are about to change. Aarav Ruparel, a charming hotelier encounters Vasudha. What follows next is a deep conversation on flowers and life. And boy! They connected so well! No surprise here. Aarav fell in love with Vasudha, because she reminded him of his mother. How sweet! Their courtship begins, which is some sort of platonic love. More intense dialogues followed. Selfies. Few songs. And yes, there are flowers everywhere. Sounds like a Nicholas Sparks’ novel?

However, trouble comes in the form of Hari, who returned home after 5 years. Rest of the film trudges along with a predictable climax and with Emraan Hashmi being friend-zoned. That’s the new favorite zone of Bollywood. Remember Ishqedarriyaan?

Hamari Adhuri Kahani lost the plot. The dialogues are melodramatic and how! It is hard to watch a brilliant actor like Vidya Balan reduce to a weepy lady in distress. What happened to that fiery woman from Kahaani or that vibrant seductress in Ishqiya? Emraan Hashmi is good at parts. He can do so much more. Rajkumaar Rao is completely wasted in this lackluster romantic film. The only feel good factor in the film are the songs.

However, we did learn one lesson. If you’re friend-zoned, there’s no escape to it, until you die.

What should you watch the film?
If you’re a sucker for slushy romantic films like Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain etcetera, Hamari Adhuri Kahani might make you weep like a baby. For the rest of us, there are so many better things to do this weekend.
