Mardaani 2: Film Review – Real. Raw. Brilliant.

Verdict: Mardaani 2 is filled with whistle-worthy performances.

While many filmmakers refrain from releasing their movies on the dreaded Friday the 13th, Gopi Puthran went ahead with a regular Friday release. This shows the amount of belief the makers had on Mardaani 2’s story and performances. Produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films, Mardaani 2 is the second part of the highly successful movie Mardaani, which released in 2014.

What’s Mardaani 2 About:

Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukerji) takes charge as SP of Kota city. Not many men in her station are happy with taking orders from a woman, especially Deputy SP Shekhawat. The first case assigned to her is the brutal rape and murder of a young woman. Shivani soon realizes that the killer is not a one-time criminal but a serial killer and rapist who is set out to commit more crimes. He is delusional and believes men are above women. *rolls eyes* Not surprisingly, he has an issue with the SP’s ‘mardaani’ and wants to teach her a lesson for thinking that she can catch him. His antics lead to a big media fiasco that results in Shivani’s transfer from Kota. With two days left for the new officer to take charge of her jurisdiction, she sets out to catch the monster.

What Works:

Gopi Puthran’s vision with Mardaani 2 is brilliant. He shows us who the perpetrator of these crimes is right at the start of the film and the story is taken forward from his perspective. Vishal Jethwa as the perpetrator stands out. He delivers a mind-blowing performance and at times, successfully scares you with his facial expressions. Vishal has been perfectly cast in this role. Rani Mukerji is, as always, phenomenal. She time and again proves that she is a force to be reckoned with. The actress delivers a mind-blowing performance and delivers dialogues that are to-the-point and not preachy. In the scene where her character chats with a male chauvinist reporter (played by Rajesh Sharma), she mentions all the issues faced by women and in spite of all the struggles, how they manage to succeed. And even when they succeed because of their own strength, they are questioned and called names. This scene could have gone wrong by being too preachy but the dialogues are adequate and Rani delivers them perfectly. Even the actors with minor roles are amazing to watch.

The climax of Mardaani 2 is one of the best parts of this Gopi Puthran directed film. It is realistic and makes you want to keep on clapping.

What Could’ve Been Better:

Gopi Puthran’s Mardaani 2 has too many empty roads where no one can see the villain commit the perfect crime. He is also shown to be way too smart and always a step ahead of the cops. Also, most men in Mardaani 2 are shown to be male chauvinists and it would have been good to see at least one scene where both the sexes agreed on the real meaning of equality.

Why You Should Watch:

If you are a true Rani Mukerji fan, rush to the theatres now. The actress has delivered one of her best performances in Mardaani 2. There is not a single dull moment in this Gopi Puthran film and it will keep you hooked till the very end.
