Motichoor Chaknachoor: Film Review – Worth the Calories

Verdict: This sweet romance is served with generous helpings of comedy and entertainment.

Bollywood production houses now plan extravagant promotional strategies before and after their movie releases. From bombarding cine-goers with advertisements to television appearances by the cast and crew, there’s no way a movie buff can miss the release of any new Bollywood film. Yet, in this age of numerous PR activities, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures quietly released the trailer of their latest film Motichoor Chaknachoor last month. Made with the finest ingredients comprising the very talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui paired for the first time with Athiya Shetty, the movie released in theatres without much hullabaloo. This Debamitra Biswal film is a romantic comedy and serves a delightful treat to cine-goers who are looking for some sweet entertainment.

What’s Motichoor Chaknachoor About:

Motichoor Chaknachoor is set in Bhopal, where arranged marriages, as well as dowry, are the norm. Anita aka Annie’s (Athiya Shetty) parents are anxious to get their daughter married but Annie is determined to marry only if her husband is settled abroad. In the next-door house, the matriarch of the Tyagi family (Vibha Chibber) is also on the lookout for a bride for her son Pushpinder (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who has returned from Dubai for a holiday. Pushpinder is now in his late 30’s and desperate to be married. Realizing that he could be her last shot, Annie tries to woo him and they elope. But while she keeps her true intentions hidden, Pushpinder might have secrets of his own.

What Works:

Motichoor Chaknachoor is essentially a story of two unlikely people who eventually fall in love. While there are glaring differences in age, maturity, or the perceived standards of beauty for Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Athiya Shetty, they do make an adorable couple and this is hardly the first Bollywood movie to feature such a pair. It’s also refreshing to see Nawazuddin in a simple avatar and it’s in the tender moments of this film that you realize that this actor can truly do it all. Athiya is the surprise package here though and has given a convincing performance as a small-town girl. She has nailed the accent and steals the spotlight for most of the film. The scenes between the couple are both sweet and funny and evoke much laughter.

Besides the lead pair, Vibha Chibber certainly makes an impact as the tough no-nonsense matriarch. The actress brings her experience to show precedence over the other actors and you’re likely to both fear and respect her. The rest of the characters mainly serve to complement the lead pair but do add to the entertainment factor of the film. Songs are few and well placed, adding to the mood of the moments. Overall, Motichoor Chaknachoor is a sweet treat you can enjoy with your entire family.

What Could’ve Been Better:

While Motichoor Chaknachoor can be entertaining, some of the humor seems outdated. The concept of dowry is also blatantly acknowledged with little to no disclaimer regarding its legalities. Instances of casual sexism, body shaming, and bizarre standards of beauty the movie tries to propagate could have been avoided. The dialogues of the film can also be hard to comprehend if you’re not familiar with the Hindi of Madhya Pradesh or its surrounding regions.

Why You Should Watch:

Craving a delightful mix of sweet romance and savory comedy? Then forget about the calories and give in to the temptation of entertainment by treating yourself to Motichoor Chaknachoor.
