MSG: The Messenger: Film Review – A film that will leave you speechless, literally!

‘I forget you neva eva, without you my life neva eva’

This is the first few minutes of MSG, a vague song, with Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan appearing in and as, you guessed it, himself. With a corrupt politician called Chillum Khurana, a mercenary who speaks terrible English and a long drawn 2nd half, MSG is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

The film showcases the fight of the Dera Saccha Sauda leader (Singh) against the flesh and drug trade, which is dubbed as the ‘Nasha Mafia’. Singh catches the attention of the mafia with his efforts at cleansing the country of social evils, and soon, they put a hit on him. They send Mike (Daniel Kaleb) a hitman, who tries to kill Singh. He fails, not once, not twice, but 5 times, thanks to Singh’s superhuman powers. What powers you ask? He turns bullets into a crown, channels electricity from his fingertips and he can also fly. But enough about Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan.

Directed by Jeetu Arora, the camerawork seems sketchy, but the sheer scale of the film is impressive. Watch out for the concerts and Singh’s larger than life (and slightly jarring) outfits. The film is long and meandering, but comes together in the last few scenes, where Singh manages to dissuade a suicide bomber from bringing the house down. He then launches into a lengthy speech about all the good deeds he’s done, and how everyone should join the Dera Saccha Sauda.

The visual effects are passable, but what brings the film down is the length. A whopping 2 hours and 57 minutes long, it becomes slightly tedious at times. What you can’t miss however, is Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan Ji, in his over-the-top cars and his diamond studded boots. Watch it to believe it.

Why should you watch the film?

Watch it to see how Singh tries to put down social evils like farmer suicides, prostitution, AIDS and the ever-increasing drug problem. You could also watch it for Singh Ji, and the supporting actors Fllora Saini and Jayshree Soni, who turn in convincing performances.
