Policegiri: Film Review

Opening on the silver screen today, Policegiri is Tamil filmmaker, K.S. Ravikumar’s Bollywood debut venture. A remake of the decade-old Kollywood movie Saamy, the Hindi version comes nowhere upto the mark with its Tamil version.

Talking about the story, Policegiri reminds you of a nineties movie – it talks about a good police officer posted in a small town controlled by the villain. He takes control of the situation and the movie comes to an end where good wins over evil. The only difference is that this movie is a far more-stylized version of the movies from the 90s with everything over-the-top. Be it the action sequences, the dialogues or even the technical aspects.

The plot of the movie portrays the fight between the good and the evil and how in the end good takes over evil and destroys it forever. The central character of the movie, DCP Rudra Aditya Devraj (Sanjay Dutt) is posted in a small town called Nagarpuram after a trail of transfers. He refers to himself as a "combo of a Police & a Gunda. Buy one get one free!" and leaves no stone unturned to clean the dirty world of the mafia reigning in the town. Nagori Subramaniam (Prakash Raj) is the underworld don, propagating crime and menace in the town. Nagori pays back to Rudra in the same coin referring to himself as a "combo of a bhikari and a shikari. Buy one get one free!" The music-loving villain’s yet another favorite dialogue is "sur Mohmmad Rafi ka hai ya nahi, power Muhammed Ali ka hai." Both the characters’ respective combos are justified owing to the fact that Rudra takes to the bad ways to do good, while Nagori turned into a don from a street beggar.

The girl-next-door, Prachi Desai plays the character of Sehar and Sanjay Dutt’s love interest in the movie. She is yet another combo in nature – a child born to a Hindu mother and a Muslim father.

The ‘combo’ and ‘buy one get one’ factor makes one feel whether it is indeed an action movie or some product advertisement.

Based on the common traits of an action-masala movie, the treatment of the script is very raw and there is nothing exceptional that will excite the audiences. Adding to the bad plot is the imposed romantic scenes and the music track along with a not-so-comic subplot. But there are few dialogues and situations that will surely tickle your funny bone.

Analysis the acting skills, Sanjay Dutt and Prakash Raj are such fine actors with some really good performances to their credits but unfortunately, in this movie both the actors indulge in exaggerated acting. Prachi though didn’t have much to do, yet she was pretty and sweet, as expected.

Throughout the movie, all the action sequences had everything from sand to humans to vehicles flying on the screen. The action sequences makes you feel that the stuntmen have a major role to play rather than the actors themselves.

Coming to the technical aspect of the movie, the vintage action formula fails to thrill the audiences. Though meant to be an entertainer, it ends up being intractable and weird at places. The screenplay is humdrum and the climax is very predictable. Most of the punches don’t have a great impact. The sound design is way too loud and outdated with sound effects including ‘dishoom dishooms‘, ‘dishkiyaun‘ for gun-shots and ‘aaaaaaaaaaahhhh‘ when someone gets hit. With five music tracks in the movie, the music department has not been able to produce an appealing work. Even visually the movie has nothing exceptional to offer except for the colorful visualization of the music tracks. The romantic number "Tirat Meri Tu" could have been shot better as the backdrop was pretty evident, so much so that it seemed that a family photo was being shot at a photo studio.

According to DCP Rudra, "Aadmi apne kaam se pehchana jaata hai… naam se nahi". Sadly Policegiri mein naa kaam hai naa naam!
