Raman Raghav 2.0: Film Review – One-Man Show
Verdict: Twisted, psychotic and delightful!

Anurag Kashyap has been flying high since the success of Udta Punjab. With Raman Raghav 2.0, the director/producer has another feather in his cap. While Udta Punjab was only produced by him, Raman Raghav 2.0 is Anurag Kashyap, through and through. Intensely gripping and superbly directed, this crime drama is another classic example of Kashyap’s style of work. Inspired by the story of Raman Raghav, a mass murderer from the 60s, the movie takes you through the journey of a serial killer, with a deep exploration of his mind and behavior. The story has been depicted episodically, by structuring the journey in eight chapters, each portraying the dark and twisted reality of Mumbai’s underbelly.

As it states at the very beginning, this movie is not about Raman Raghav of the 60s. The lead character Ramanna (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) has been inspired by the serial killer, and executes his own murders in similar fashion, i.e. using crude tools like a huge stone or an iron rod. Like Raman Raghav, he, too, believes that God speaks to him and asks him to commit the crimes he does. What’s unique about him is that he has neither remorse nor the fear of being caught. In fact, he surrenders after committing nine murders, but the police do not take him seriously due to his ease and candor. After being let loose, he goes on and kills more people, while keeping a close eye on Inspector Raghavan (Vicky Kaushal), who is investigating the murders he has committed. Raghavan, a drug addict, gets deeply involved in the case, only to realize that he is not very different from the man he seeks.

Raman Raghav 2.0 still - BookMyShow
Even though the movie has two lead actors, Nawazuddin Siddiqui steals the show. The actor slips into the skin of a psychotic serial killer flawlessly, giving one of the best performances of his career so far. Vicky Kaushal does justice to his part, too, but Nawazuddin takes all the attention throughout. The makers do a commendable job of exploring those areas of Bombay, which are not usually seen in movies, and giving the audience a look at the reality of the masses. Ram Sampath’s soundtrack resonates well with the dark plot and psychedelic theme, creating the right mood at the right time. In the end, there is no 'take-back' from the film. It simply shows how we all have a little psychosis in us. Raman Raghav 2.0 is not meant to spark it, but to satiate it. Go watch this movie to quench your bloodlust!

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Raman Raghav 2.0 deserves a watch mainly for Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s superb performance. Even if you’re not a fan of dark themes and graphic violence, carry a paper bag, but do not miss this movie!

20 Years of Lagaan: 5 Unknown facts about the film

1. Aamir Khan had never worn a dhoti before. He learnt how to tie it in just one day. When I had asked him how audiences would react to their hero in a dhoti his sensible reply was, “Whether I wear a dhoti in Lagaan or whether it is a period film all that is irrelevant. Audiences will come if they like the story.” And they did! Aamir was right.

Aamir Khan to resume shooting for Laal Singh Chaddha today

The second wave of the Coronavirus brought most industries to a standstill. While the TV shows managed to shoot by relocating to Gujarat, Daman, Silvassa etc, the filmmakers preferred to wait till the situation improves to some extent. Thankfully, the Covid-19 cases have been declining steadily prompting the Maharashtra government to go for a level-based unlocking strategy. It means the districts and cities with the least cases and least positivity will be in Level 1 and can fully open. Meanwhile, those in Level 5 will have the most restrictions. Mumbai, the hub of the film industry, falls in Level 3. As per the rules, shooting can resume in Maharashtra’s capital city but it can take place only in a bubble. Moreover, it should be over by 5:00 pm.
