Roy: Film Review – Lacks punch

Roy: Film Review – Lacks punch

At the end of the film, Arjun Rampal says, "Mujhe nahi pata ki yeh film kaise ban gayi." And there, in the theatre, as you munch away at your over-priced popcorn, you feel the exact same thing. Wow! So Roy finally released. Let’s all calm down now. Our desire of seeing Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal together onscreen has been fulfilled. But the excitement fizzles out way too soon.

Vikramjit Singh’s debut film "Roy" promised a lot. Unfortunately, it delivers very little. Kabir Grewal (Arjun Rampal) is a successful writer/filmmaker. He lives in a swanky apartment with an adorable golden retriever. His weapon of choice: An antique typewriter. Man of your dreams? Known to the media as a casanova, Kabir’s life takes a twist when he comes across another filmmaker, the ever-gorgeous Ayesha Aamir (Jacqueline Fernandez). Soon, she becomes Kabir’s fling number 23! Amidst all this, there’s Ranbir Kapoor. A brooding mystery man. Who is… Well, still a mystery.

It is good to see Arjun Rampal on the big screen once again. We are given striking shots of the actor. The suave actor puffs away to glory, sips his drink and bangs his head over writer’s block and a broken heart (really?). But Singh fails to bring out the character’s complexities and struggle. All we get is one brooding man who might be in love. We would like to think so. Or was it writer’s block? Jacqueline is alluring, both as Tia and Ayesha. She does justice to her roles. Much can’t be said about Ranbir Kapoor. He is just there. Driving his shiny Jaguar E-type. Sometimes acting.

Vikramjit Singh tried to switch between two different plots, which is rare in Bollywood. It is definitely a brave attempt. But the transition between the two stories is rough and will leave you confused. It complicates the entire film, making it lose its grip. The cinematography by Himman Dhamija is stunning. And the music compliments the beautiful shots.

Why should you watch this film?
If you have no plans this Valentine’s weekend, Roy might be a good idea. But then again, there are better things to do… If you know what I mean.
