Sarbjit: Film Review – An Overdose of Aishwarya

Verdict: A film based on a true story that fails to create a lasting effect.

There are some stories that need to be voiced so that people get an idea of the real picture. One such true story is of Sarabjit Singh and his sister, Dalbir Kaur. Director Omung Kumar has tried to narrate this real-life story by casting Randeep Hooda and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles for his film Sarbjit.

The film starts by showing Dalbir (Aishwarya) frantically searching for her brother Sarbjit (played by Randeep Hooda) in the fields during the late hours of the night. Little does she know that this search would later turn into the greatest struggle of her life. The film then goes into flashback mode, which gives you a glimpse of Dalbir’s marital life – how it turn from perfect to abusive. Later, it transitions into showing the playful side of Sarbjit and his family that now consists of his wife (Richa Chadda), two children, father and sister, Dalbir.

When everything was going fine, one dreadful night changes the lives of this family forever. Sarbjit accidentally happens to cross the Indo-Pak border, and that lands him into Pakistan’s captivity. He is immediately considered to be an Indian terrorist who was responsible for bombings in Pakistan. In order to make him spill the truth, he is brutally beaten and tortured.

Meanwhile, Dalbir gets to know the whereabouts of her brother. She realizes that the Pakistani forces have mistaken him for someone else and have sentenced him to death. She then goes to extreme lengths to save her brother’s life and prove that he is not guilty. That’s when the movie shows the ugly side of the system and the conflict between the two countries. Will Dalbir get justice for her brother? Watch Sarbjit to know more.

The film constantly shuttles between the present and the past in order to create a contrasting effect. But while doing so, many sequences are not fully played out and that makes it look sloppy. The film also has many powerful dialogues but in many instances, they feel unnecessary and overdone. It’s almost like the focus of the film has shifted towards becoming a melodramatic Bollywood film. The casting of the film also could have been more realistic. Aishwarya struggles to do justice to Dalbir Kaur’s role.

While watching a film based on a real-life, heart-wrenching story, you expect it to create an impact on you or perhaps, make you feel patriotic for a bit. But with Sarbjit, you feel that the true essence of the movie is lost.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Watch this film because you want to know about Dalbir Kaur’s struggle and get the gist of Sarabjit Singh’s story. Also, if you are a fan of Randeep Hooda, you will definitely not be disappointed. He has indeed done justice to his role.
