Shaadi Ke Side Effects: Film Review

Shaadi Ke Side Effects (SKSE) brings to life the iconic characters, Sid(dharth) and Trisha. This time as husband and wife. They are a happily-married couple. But their life goes topsy-turvy with the arrival of their baby. Romance takes a backseat. Everything is limited to their new born baby, which makes no sense. This leaves the husband insecure and frustrated encouraging him to lead a double life. Part-time as the perfect family man, part-time as the carefree single dude. As the story progesses, there are "happy" realizations, confessions, decisions and life eventually comes back on track. The never-ending circle repeats, but with a twist. A crying baby, a carefree husband and a nagging wife is the crux of Shaadi Ke Side Effects.

SKSE is Saket Chaudhary’s follow up film to the well-received 2006 movie, Pyaar Ke Side Effects. Starring Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat, it was a rom-com about two commitment-phobic individuals running away from the inevitable responsibilities of marriage. The story was narrated from the male point of view. The saga continues in Shaadi Ke Side Effects. This time escaping the responsibilities brought in by parenthood.

The entire plot of the movie is biased, and completely in favor of Sid (Farhan Akhtar), majorly offering only his perspective towards post-wedding issues and parenthood. Throughout the movie, Sid has been portrayed as the victim. And Trisha (Vidya Balan) as the non-stop, unbearable nagging wife. Towards the climax, when Sid realizes his mistakes and apologizes, he is still in Trisha’s good books. A gentleman who accepts his mistakes and is sorry. How can you not love such a man? Ultimately, it was his better-half who made him commit all the mistakes. Ugh

Farhan Akhtar as Siddharth is absolutely amazing. Apart being a cute hubby, his witticism was bang on spot. His facial expressions did most of the talking compared to his dialogues. Vidya Balan, as Trisha, a successful working woman to a nagging wife to over-protective mother is also worth praises. But her fashion statement in the movie could have been a tad-bit better. Other supporting cast including Ram Kapoor, Gautami Kapoor, Purab Kohli, Ila Arun and Rati Agnihotri along with "a not-so-special appearance" (as listed) of Vir Das were perfect for their respective characters.

The first-half of the movie is very high on the humor quotient. Unfortunately, it fizzles out post-interval. Hence, the screenplay tries to keep the audience engaged with unwanted twists. Though expected to be an intelligent and mature take on the post-wedding issues, SKSE ends up being a mere-fictionalized, exaggerated version.

Why should you watch this film?

Though far from what happens in real life, Shaadi Ke Side Effects is an amusing, empathetic and enjoyable movie. Yet another (concrete) reason to watch the film – cute as a button Farhan Akthar. Unmarried people, SKSE is not the "formula" for a happy marriage, but a nice weekend escape.
