Super Nani: Film Review – A moral tale meets soap opera – the kitschy version.

Bollywood has always tried to send a strong message about woman empowerment. From Gulab Gang to Mardaani to Mary Kom, actresses have supported this cause. Now joining the league is the eternal beauty diva, Rekha who plays Super Nani.

Based on the Gujarati play, ‘Baa Ae Maari Boundary‘, this Bollywood adaptation is the story of a selfless lady who has diligently served her family as a wife, mother and grandmother. But all that she got back from her family was disrespect. She was ridiculed and taken for granted by her entire family. Will her life stay the same? Or will it take a miraculous turn for something good? Watch Super Nani to know for yourself.

Director Indra Kumar of ‘Grand Masti‘ and ‘Beta‘ fame tries his best to focus on woman empowerment. Unfortunately Super Nani isn’t the perfect tribute. Though the movie is made with lot of love and respect, it has a lot of drawbacks. The major one being the predictability of the script which has been infused with immense amount of melodrama. The concept of an abla naari who gains the respect and love she deserves, with the help of a guardian angel, worked wonders in the ’80s and ’90s. But in the present day, even with the presence of glamorous Rekha, it fails to hit the right note with the viewers. Neither the jokes could infuse laughter nor the emotional scenes could evoke grief or sadness. Even the one-liners fell flat.

The ‘gyaan baazi‘ throughout the film feels like you are watching a morally-correct Hindi serial on the silver screen for 135 minutes.

Speaking about the performances, every character gets decent screen time including the maid. Rekha, as the lovable nani (read: granny), manages to pull off the show entirely by herself. But even she gets a bit loud in several scenes of the film. The movie opens with Sharman Joshi working on his documentary about mothers. Though he manages to create a charming presence on screen, his ‘bad-Hindi’ dialogues will put you off completely. Watching great actors like Randhir Kapoor and Anupam Kher ham on screen may leave you disappointed. Super Nani didn’t even prove to be the perfect platform for launching Shweta Kumar in Bollywood. The rest of the cast too fail to impress.

Super Nani‘s technical aspects are not even worth mentioning. The music which was composed by Harshit Saxena and Sanjeev Darshan and sung by melodious Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam is forgettable, to be honest.

In short, you will leave the theatre thinking, "why did Rekha even agree to be the Super Nani?"

Why should you watch this film?

Are you a die-hard Rekha fan? Then you will manage to sit through this 135 minutes of abla-naari-turned-femme fatale soap saga. At the most, the film is a decent effort by director Indra Kumar, who after having tried his hand at adult-comedy, tries to shift towards woman empowerment.
