Total Dhamaal: Film Review – Paisa Vasool!

Verdict: This multi-starrer is a thoroughly entertaining comic ride.

Once in a while, there comes a movie in Bollywood that you cannot really review. Such movies are not made with the intent that most other films are made with – critical and public acclaim. It has one and one intent alone and that is to make you laugh. A slapstick comedy directed by Indra Kumar, Total Dhamaal is one such film with actors like Ajay Devgn, Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, and Javed Jaffrey. The film has all the elements that you could ask for in a multi-starrer – action, comedy, dance, and song. But the question is – have all the elements worked well together?

What’s Total Dhamaal About:

Small-time crook (Ajay Devgn) and his sidekick (Sanjay Mishra) get double-crossed by Pinto (Manoj Pahwa) who flees with 50 crores in cash. Pinto gets involved in an accident while being chased by Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Mishra. In his dying moments, Pinto tells everyone present at the site of the accident the location of the hidden treasure. From here on, chaos ensues with everyone wanting to find the money first, taking us on an adventure of a lifetime.

What Works:

Total Dhamaal delivers what it promises – laughs and a lot of it. The characters are all grouped in pairs and they manage to bring out a few giggles. Like in the earlier parts, Javed Jaffrey and Arshad Warsi deliver fantastic performances. As a frustrated married couple, Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor bring out the most laughs with their antics. It is also amazing to watch these two actors together on-screen after so long. The song My Name is Lakhan from their popular movie Ram Lakhan has been used perfectly in one of the scenes between them and it will definitely crack you up. Riteish Deshmukh perfects the UP accent really well. His scenes with Johny Lever are the highlight of this comedy film. As a Bengali helicopter pilot, Johny Lever proves why he is still remembered as the original King of Comedy in Bollywood.

Sonakshi Sinha makes a special appearance and adds to the oomph factor with her dance number on the song Mungda Mungda.

What Could’ve Been Better:

Though most of the comedy dialogues hit the right notes, a few go amiss. Some punchlines fall flat too. We had more expectations from Sanjay Mishra, who usually stands out in any multi-starrer comedy film, but does not make the same impact with Total Dhamaal. His constant ‘bro’ act only manages to evoke a few laughs. We would have loved to see more of Eesha Gupta and Mahesh Manjrekar too.

Why You Should Watch:

If you are looking for a light-hearted film, then this is the one for you. It is a clean family comedy entertainer with no double-meaning jokes that can be enjoyed by all.

Stellar performances, a fantastic storyline, the foot-tapping title track and the ghostly entity Manjulika render it a must-watch. Anees Bazmee’s standalone sequel smartly lifts the elements that made the OG movie work, but give us entirely new characters and plot.

When Priyadarshan’s horror-comedy ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ released in 2007, it delighted both critics and the public. A remake of the 1993 Malayalam movie ‘Manichitrathazu’, the Hindi film features Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja. A solid storyline backed by crackling performances (especially Kumar and Balan), foot-tapping music, peak comedy interspersed with supernatural thrills, a surprising psychological twist, and a legendary spectral entity in the form of Manjulika made it an absolute must-watch.
