Total Siyapaa: Film Review

Living upto its title, the movie is indeed, Total Siyapaa. Total chaos, total madness. Starring Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam, the trailer of the movie looked interesting and promising. But the film is nowhere close to being hilarious. It’s sad to watch a film with a promising trailer that starts to fall apart into an incoherent chaos.

Set in London, Total Siyapaa is the tale of a romantic couple – Aman (Ali Zafar) and Asha (Yami Gautam). Excited to introduce her boyfriend to her family, Asha has informed her mother (Kirron Kher) that he is from a different faith. But she has conveniently hidden the fact that he is a Pakistani. Guess the saying is indeed true, ‘Love is Blind’, hence a Pakistani man falls in love with a Hindustani woman.

Coming back to the movie, Siyapaa No.1 is her family. A bunch of crazy individuals. A hysterical mother (sole-bearer of the entire household’s worries). A blind dadu (ex-armyman walking around with a loaded rifle). A self-centered sister, Jia (please tell her it’s not right to ‘play footsie’ and ‘dance on the table’ with your sister’ boyfriend). A brother gone cuckoo, Manav (always openly racist towards his Pakistani neighbors). A naughty kid niece, Anjali (playing inappropriate games like flaunting a fake pregnant belly). And daddy (he being there or not doesn’t matter. He was almost invisible).

Siyapaa No.2 – The introduction of characters like Kanjoos Jiju, Jia’s husband and Percy, the policeman. His appearance seemed to be a parody of Rowan Atkinson‘s epic character ‘Mr. Bean’.

Moving forward, Siyapaa No.3 is the story itself. Aman makes a sincere effort to win the hearts of his difficult future in-laws. What follows is a chain of events intended to be a series of comedy of errors. Unfortunately, none of them are funny or lead to a funny situation or climax. But as most Bollywood rom-coms, Total Siyapaa comes to a close with a ‘happy ending’. In an attempt to make every scene funny, the movie ends up being not-so-funny and very very boring. The first-half of the film has some sharp dialogues and genuinely funny situations. But they don’t sustain throughout. The post-interval part is on a totally different tangent. The pre and post interval portions of the movie don’t fall in sync with each other.

The cast excluding Kirron Kher and Ali Zafar were not in sync with the story and characters. Ali Zafar as the baffled Pakistani boy and Kirron Kher as the exacting mother were the only delights worth watching. Beautiful Yami couldn’t make a cut with her smiles and giggles as Asha Singh. Anupam Kher made an appearance post-interval. But the audience is left thinking why he even made a screen appearance? It’s disheartening to watch a talented actor’s caliber being wasted.

Why must you watch this film?

If you are a fan of Ali Zafar, Yami Gautam and the Khers (specifically Kirron Kher) you can watch this one. Also, London has been captured beautifully on camera. If you have to settle scores with someone, please recommend Total Siyapaa.
