Wajah Tum Ho: Film Review – So Bewajah!

Verdict: The most twisted mystery of the year.

Sex mysteries have recently become a fad in India. Even if the mystery revolves around a ghost from a million years ago trying to exact revenge on mankind today, she will be shown seducing the characters, before killing them. We get it. Sex sells. Even when the script or the actors are not strong enough to carry a movie, it is the one thing that will attract audiences. Not every filmmaker can afford to have an Alia Bhatt or a Ranbir Kapoor in their films. Vishal Pandya’s latest murder mystery, Wajah Tum Ho, seemed to fit that bill. But even the best plot-guessers will be left in shock by the movie, in which the mystery unravels through many, many twists and turns.

The film starts with a live murder broadcast on television. But it's not meant to invoke sympathy, as the victim is your regular sleazy cop. The suspect is the CEO of the channel, which aired the live footage. The youngest man to ever become CEO of a top news channel, Rahul Arora (Rajneesh Duggal) pleads 'Not Guilty', claiming that his channel was hacked. He is backed by his legal head Siya (Sana Khan), who Rahul is trying to woo. Sleaziness is a running trope in the film. The youngest Inspector to ever work on such a high-profile case, Kabir Deshmukh (Sharman Joshi), thinks Rahul is either directly or indirectly involved in the murder. He, meanwhile, is backed by the state lawyer Ranveer (Gurmeet Choudhary), who seems to have a personal vendetta against Rahul. What makes this web more interesting is that Siya and Ranveer are romantically involved. Just when you think that the puzzle has been solved, more pieces are added to it. After another person is killed in a similar fashion, Rahul’s murky past is revealed and the real wajah behind the murders simply leaves you appalled.

Vishal Pandya’s film has an interesting story, but its execution is shoddy. With a better screenplay, cast, and direction, the film may have worked. But you cannot make a cake with just the chocolate. The other ingredients are equally important. Vishal Pandya muddled the proportions and the result is a crumbling brownie. Just as the mystery starts to unravel, Pandya decides to change the plot. This happens too many times for anyone’s liking. Most scenes are superfluous, and add nothing to the story. While the ‘sex scenes’ are meant for titillating effect, they are only limited to three songs.

It’s hard to pick a lead pair for this movie. If it is meant to be Gurmeet Choudhary and Sana Khan, both fail to do their job. Comparatively, Sharman Joshi and Rajneesh Duggal’s performances are more eye-grabbing and convincing. The supporting characters do not make any difference, other than Kabir Deshmukh’s sidekick, named after possibly the only Maharashtrian name loved by Bollywood – Gaitonde. He plays the typical cop, who beats his victims till they confess, and enjoys brilliant camaraderie with Sharman’s character. Gurmeet and Sana only seem to exist to add to the titillation, although Sana tries really hard to be the strong female lead. Yet, every character in the film is crucial to the confusing plot, adding new ingredients to an already packed mixture. In the end, what we have is a plot more twisted than Gurmeet and Sana’s entwined bodies.

Why You Should Watch This Film:

If you are a fan of murder mysteries, this one is bound to keep you guessing. There are plot twistssuspicious new charactersbrutal homicides, and every clue takes you further away from the truth. If not that, enjoy watching Gurmeet’s amazingly toned body, or Zarine Khan’s item number. Let sex do the selling!
