Pailwaan: Film Review – Kiccha Sudeep Excels In Yet Another Entertainer

Verdict: Pailwaan is moving and will undoubtedly give you goosebumps.

Following the footsteps of Baahubali, subsequent southern movies that have rich content and universal appeal have been making their presence felt. Films like KGF and Saaho are classic examples from the recent past. Pailwaan, starring Kiccha Sudeep, is testing its luck today by releasing in five different languages across the country. Suniel Shetty, Aakanksha Singh and Sushant Singh are making their debut in Kannada while cinematographer-turned-director S Krishna, is donning another hat as a producer with Pailwaan. Touted to be a sports drama with Sudeep playing two shades of a character – one as a wrestler and the other as a boxer – director Krishna promises to deliver a movie that he believes in.

What’s Pailwaan About:

Krishna (Kiccha Sudeep) is an orphan raised by Sarkar (Suniel Shetty), his wrestling guru. With the help of Sarkar, he grows up to become a state level wrestling champion. However, Sarkar wants Krishna to become a nation-wide champion. Krishna is distracted from his goal as he falls in love with Rukmini (Aakanksha Singh). This irks Sarkar and removes Krishna from his life. How Krishna brings himself to focus on his goals and participates in a boxing championship forms the rest of Pailwaan.

What Works:

Pailwaan totally belongs to the talented Kiccha Sudeep. He has carried the entire movie on his shoulders with his enthralling act and is bound to bring him a lot of praise and awards from every nook of the industry. Though we’ve seen Aakanksha Singh in Telugu movies like Devadas and Malli Raave, she makes an impressive debut in Sandalwood. Suniel Shetty’s role acts as a catalyst with respect to the emotions and is a delight to watch him after quite a long time. Sushant Singh and Kabir Dulhan Singh do full justice to the roles they portray. No wonder S Krishna turned producer to direct a movie that he believed in his instincts and is impeccable with his direction in Pailwaan. D S Kannan’s writing is spot on and Arjun Janya’s music and background score hit hard. Karunakar’s frames go well with the sports genre and Ruben’s editing makes the movie almost perfect.

What Could’ve Been Better:

At a certain point, Pailwaan has a tried-and-tested approach towards sports movies. Though the plot is a little predictable, the conceptual narrative style overcomes all the minor drawbacks.

Why You Should Watch:

Though we’ve seen many movies made with sports background in the past, Pailwaan is a notch different from the earlier one’s and is an emotional galore. Kiccha Sudeep’s act and the threading emotional backdrop make Pailwaan a hypnotic watch. Surely, this is the best from Sudeep till date.
