Parvathy Totally Wins Varthamanam, An Excellent Political Thriller

Varthamanam is a social drama that is highly relevant in our current political scenario. The film directed by Sidharth Siva features Parvathy Thiruvothu and Roshan Mathew in the lead along with powerful performers like Siddique. The film revolves around Faiza Sufiya, a research scholar who joins a prominent university in Delhi for her research. Faiza (Parvathy) gets exposed to various political ideologies in the university and chooses to side with the one that she feels is right. This is where she meets Amal (Roshan Mathew), Tulsa, and others who are fighting for Dalit rights and against fascism. Most of them being Malayalees and their common political ideologies lead to a strong bond develops between them. However, her political stance leads Faiza in deep trouble. Faiza’s vulnerabilities, strengths, and other factors are the crux of the film.

Faiza’s politics is the highlight

Faiza hails from a political family where her grandfather was a freedom fighter. His experiences give her a strong opinion about her country right from her childhood and she is politically aware. Faiza is a strong believer in her religion too, however, she believes in secularism in the country. This itself is the politics of the film – how a believer could fight for secularism. She is deeply affected by the atrocities happening to the Dalits and strongly says no to the religious activities in the university. She is bold at the same time vulnerable too – there are various incidents in the film which show us her vulnerability and the fact that though she believes in secularism and anti-fascism, she isn’t courageous like her peers. However, within her limitations, she still makes a point and that is refreshing to watch.

Varthamanam boasts of superb performances

Sidharth Siva has made no mistakes in the casting of the film. Each character is well written and well performed as well. Parvathy is really good as Faiza. Faiza’s strong will, helplessness, fear of everything have been well performed by the actor. In fact, you just cannot imagine someone else in the role. Roshan Mathew is one real talent to look forward to. With various portrayals over the years, he proves time and again that he is here to stay. Siddique as usual complements everyone and is the right choice for the role.

A few mismatches here and there

Varthamanam talks about a lot of issues that have been socially relevant, but nothing finds a closure. Be it Rohit’s issue or Tulsa’s we miss a closure. The climax gets dramatic, however, that could be the only right ending to the film.

Varthamanam is a good watch and you won’t be disappointed spending your money on it. It may not be highly entertaining, but it speaks of politics that we all must be aware of. In the end, Faiza urges the audience for some answers, which we must seek sooner or later.
