Velipadinte Pusthakam: Film Review -An Onam Sadhya With Lalettan

Verdict: A murder-thriller with some thrills.

When the news broke that a Lal JoseMohanlal film will soon hit the theater, Malayalam film audience were, as expected, thrilled. It was going to be the first time Lal Jose and Mohanlal were doing a film together. It has finally hit the big screen as an Onam release.

Produced by Anthony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas, Velipadinte Pusthakam is expected to be the production house's next super-hit film after Drishyam (2013) , Ennum Eppozhum (2015), Loham (2015) and Oppam (2016). Also, the music, especially the song Eantammede Jimikki Kammal, has turned into the new favorite among the youngsters.

These were a few reasons why we thought the film was going to be no less than an Onam sadya, but sadly it has no Paayasam.

The film set in a college campus close to a fishing harbor is faced with the issue of two rival groups led by Sameer (Arun Kurian) and Franklin (Sarath Kumar). Sameer leads the group that belongs to the rich families from the town while Franklin leads a group of youngsters who come from the fishing community. With silly fights in the campus that the college management can't control, a new Vice- Principal takes charge and yes, you guessed it right. It's Mohanlal. Mohanlal who plays the role of Michael Idiculla makes a grand entry. He tries hard and succeeds in getting the two warring groups to get along with each other.

Starting off as a comedy-drama the film takes the route of a murder mystery. Who is Vishwan (Anoop Menon) and what is his role in this college drama? To find out, watch this film.

Talking about the performances, the film definitely has a huge cast list but the script and screenplay fail these actors. For instance, young actor Arun Kurian of the Aanandam fame will obviously see this film with the superstar Mohanlal as an experience but will this film do him any good? That's a no. His role is not well crafted. Sarath Kumar's character too was a huge let down from his last film Angamaly Diaries where he impressed everyone as Appani Ravi

Brilliant veteran actors like Siddique, Alencier Ley Lopez and Krishna Kumar could have been used in a beeter way in the film.

Michael Idiculla may have been the calmest character for Lalettan but the only time we get to see 'Narasimham' Mohanlal that we all have come to know and love over the years is when he is in his second character. But, we can't reveal what his other character is, you will have to find it out for yourself in the theater near you. Salim Kumar as Prof. Prem Raj aka Kaama Raj does make you laugh at times with his antics but most of the time he goes overboard. The female actors – Reshma Rajan (Mary) and Priyanka Nair essayed roles that lacked any depth and substance. As far as the dialogues in the film go, they fall a bit flat. The film had all the money and star-cast but what it lacked was a strong script. This is where it all falls apart.

The music by Shaan Rahman is good and the song Eantammede Jimikki Kammal sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Renjith Unni will make you dance every time you hear it.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
It's Onam weekend and if you want to watch Mohanlal in two different avatars, you should definitely go watch the film.
