Vijay Superum Pournamiyum: Film Review – Randu Perum Kalakki!

Verdict: Vijay Superum Pournamiyum makes you forget all your worries and become a part of Vijay and Pinky’s life.

Director Jis Joy associates with Asif Ali for the third time for yet another feel-good movie, this time with the remake of Telugu hit Pelli Choopulu named Vijay Superum Pournamiyum. The film is produced by AK Sunil under the banner New Surya Films and features many prominent actors including Aishwarya Lekshmi, Siddique, Renji Panicker, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Shanti Krishna, Balu Varghese, Devan, Aju Varghese, and Joseph Annamkutty Jose. Newcomer Prince George handles the music while Renadive and Ratheesh Raj take on the cinematography and editing roles respectively.

What’s Vijay Superum Pournamiyum About:

Vijay (Asif Ali) is a B. Tech graduate who dreams of becoming a chef but cannot fulfill his dreams due to parental pressure. He always struggles in excelling at anything, a trait that follows him even in his adolescence. Pournami, meanwhile, is a smart and intelligent girl who wants to be an entrepreneur. Although her parents constantly put pressure on her to get married, she has a clear decision of achieving success before she gives in to marriage. Vijay and Pournami’s paths meet through some miscommunication and after talking to each other, they learn that they have nothing in common. However, destiny brings them together to fulfill their dreams by supporting each other.

What Works:

The plot is simple, yet relatable and engaging. The characters are written so well, there is a slice of everyone’s life in them. Asif Ali is convincing as a nobody named Vijay. Aishwarya Lekshmi is excellently realistic and excels as Pournami. Siddique and Renji Panicker are too good as fathers who are concerned about their children. Balu Varghese is hilarious while Joseph Annamkutty Jose and Aju Varghese manage to create a laugh or two. Jis Joy has included renditions of old Malayalam songs in all his previous movies and he repeats it this time as well; Prince George beautifully recreates the songs from the past with a touch of love and nostalgia. He also has done a good job with the BGM that syncs well with the story. The film, on the whole, provides a good message, especially to parents who pressurize their children to get married or become something that they want them to be.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The movie gets slightly unrealistic towards the end. It also has some preachy dialogues and scenes that could have been avoided. The story falls flat in the second half; however it manages to pick up and makes you feel satisfied by the end.

Why You Should Watch:

Everything about Vijay Superum Pournamiyum makes you feel good. It is a blend of love, laughter, emotions, struggle, and reality. The film entertains you for a good two-and-a-half hours, has quite a few sweet surprises, and you leave the cinema hall with a smile on your face. It’s a perfect watch for families!
