Kanha: Film Review- A Pyramid of Twists and Turns.

Verdict: A film that encapsulates the true spirit of Janmashtami.

A fast-paced action-packed film, Kanha gives us a glimpse of the mechanics, sweat and politics that goes behind Dahi Handi. The movie could not have hit cinemas at a better time as it was only yesterday that we saw govindas all over the state of Maharashtra form human pyramids to break the handi, in order to mark the auspicious day of the birth of Lord Krishna. That being said, the timing of its release may be the only thing that works in favor of the film.

The film begins with the story of Kanha, a young boy who accidentally falls from the top of a human pyramid and is being rushed to the hospital. The movie revolves around the life of Malhar (Vaibbhav Tatwawdi), Kanha’s brother and a member of the Jai Bajrang Group who loves the sport but is afraid of heights. Raghu (Gashmeer Mahajani) on the other hand is a member of the rival Jai Ekta Group and a loyal of aspiring politician Madhukarrao (Kiran Karmarkar). With constant friction among the two groups on who will be able to achieve the ultimate record-breaking nine-tier pyramid, the film aims to bring to light the festival from the perspective of the govindas, something which is not very common. Despite the struggle for funds, the hunt for sponsors and government restrictions, the love and passion for the festival is what keeps the govindas and Malhar’s Jai Bajrang Group going.

Kanha Movie Review

Brought back to present day, Kanha has been admitted in the hospital and we soon realise there is much more to his unfortunate fall than it may seem. The dialogues are witty and the music of the film is definitely a hit, capturing the true spirit of the festival and making you get off your feet and get dancing. While the lead actors have done a fine job, the story is a let down with its cliched twists and fails to stir our emotions. The action sequences and efficient acting of the cast in portraying the simplicity and passion for the sport of the Marathi manoos is what keeps this film from drowning.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Kanha is a simple film with a regular story. However, it deals with an issue, which is relevant and not talked about much, giving us an idea of the various difficulties faced by the govindas of Maharashtra. If you are still in the spirit of Janmashtami and often find yourself standing on the sidelines cheering on the govindas, this film will not disappoint you.
