Sairat: Film Review – A Complete Entertainer

Verdict: Another Nagraj Manjule film that will not disappoint you.

Movies based on love stories are not new to Marathi cinema-goers. Almost every director has played with this concept and tried to explore a new angle through their movies. The National Award-winning director, Nagraj Manjule, who gave us hits such as Pistulya and Fandry, has done it again by giving us another sensational love story, Sairat. He has taken the simplest of ideas and tried to present the stark reality of rural society. He was able to create this by selecting the right locations and the cast for the film. One that takes you closest to the reality rather than making it seem glamorous or made-up. This film also vividly captures the simple living of the people in the villages that will probably make some of you miss your warm holidays in your village.

Like all love stories, this film, too, consists of its very own Romeo and Juliet. Akash Thosar, plays the role of Prashant Kale – a college-going boy, who belongs to a lower-caste fisherman’s family, while Rinku Rajguru, plays the role of Archana Patil a.k.a. Archie, who comes from an influential, well-to-do family. It’s easy to guess what will happen when two people from opposite ends of the spectrum fall in love with each other.

The movie starts by portraying Prashant’s love and obsession towards Archie. It also shows how he and his two best friends try to grab her attention so that he can finally confess his love for her. On the other hand, Archie is shown as a fierce, no-nonsense type of girl who also secretly likes the attention that she is getting from Prashant. Finally, they both meet and spill out the truth, which marks the beginning of their love story.

When you are in love, you tend to concentrate on the nicer things rather than thinking about the side-effects of love. That’s when everything goes wrong. Archie’s father finds out about their romance and tries everything possible to keep them away from each other. But this doesn’t stop the couple from going against all odds. They, with the help of their friends, flee all the chaos. While on the run, the couple is struck by the harsh reality, which somewhat makes them realize that love is not easy and it’s clearly not a game for kids. It is a relationship that comes with its perks but when it’s gone wrong, can also prove to be mentally and physically exhausting; something that society, love stories, movies, and so on fail to explain or elaborate on.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Watch this movie to find out how things turn out for this couple and how society feels and reacts to relationships of such young runaways. Nagraj Manjule has created a complete cinematic experience for his viewers. This film also marks the debut of Akash Thosar and Rinku Rajguru, who have done complete justice to their roles.
