YZ: Film Review – Go Become YZ!

Verdict: A coming-of-"middle"- age film.

This has been a huge year for Marathi cinema with films like Natsamrat, Sairat and Half Ticket have raised the bar. Director Sameer Vidwan’s comedy-drama YZ definitely strikes a chord. While it may not be the most original film, and you may have surely come across similar storylines, the unique something that each actor brings to the table is what makes this film stand out.
A catchy title, YZ, is set around the life Gajanan Kulkarni (Sagar Deshmukh), a 33-year-old History professor living his mundane life in the small town of Wai in Maharashtra. However, things are about change as Gajanan shifts to Pune for his job. A sharp contrast from Wai, the city of Pune only adds to his loneliness, as he longs for a romantic companion. He befriends one of his students Battis (Akshay Tanksale), who starts training him on how to become YZ, which is basically code for changing his life and making him a more happening person. As he begins his training under Battis, Kulkarni is exposed to new experiences and ideas. He meets Parnarekha (Sai Tamhankar), who he thinks is the perfect woman for him. Aparna (Parna Pethe) is another girl with whom he shares a special bond. However, when you think Gajanan is about to have his long-overdue happy ending, things take a drastic turn.

While the film starts out with a very generic storyline and does not stir up much of an interest, things begin to spruce up after Battis enters Gajanan’s life. The dialogues are witty and funny and will leave you with a constant smile on your face. When you think you know exactly what is about to happen next, the story takes an unconventional route. The characters are realistic and relatable and there are no faults to pick when it comes to acting with seasoned actors like Sagar Deshmukh and Sai Tamhankar at their best. Although the dialogues and performances are the highlight, the film lacks a certain originality and gives the feel of just another Bollywood film with a peppy song and a day-dreaming protagonist.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
With its whole coming-of-‘middle’-age vibe and tongue-in-cheek humor, this inspiring film with convincing performances is what makes YZ a charming weekend watch.
