Ik Sandhu Hunda Si: Film Review – An Action-packed Entertainer

Verdict: Gippy Grewal shines in a role that’s tailor-made for him.

Action. Love. Action. Friendship. Action. This pretty much summarizes Ik Sandhu Hunda Si. Gippy Grewal dares to serve an action-packed film to an audience that is used to accept and absorb only rom-coms. But does he serve it well? Is the film more than just fights and action? And most importantly, does it manage to entertain and hold the audience’s attention for two hours? Let’s analyze.

What’s Ik Sandhu Hunda Si About:

Rajveer Sandhu (Gippy Grewal) is a daring college student who falls in love with Simran (Neha Sharma), whose brother is the local MLA. As much as he loves Simran, Sandhu swears by his friends Gill (Roshan Prince) and Grewal (Dheeraj Kumar). When Simran’s brothers come to know about their love, they attack Gill. This begins a war between Sandhu and Simran’s brothers. Will Simran stand by Sandhu and go against her family? Will Sandhu’s friends support him? The movie goes on to answer these questions and more.

What Works:

Gippy Grewal is a name synonymous with quality cinema. Be it comedy, thrillers or action, the talented superstar gives it his all. And if there’s one shining point in Ik Sandhu Hunda Si, it’s definitely him. But there are more heroes in the film, namely writers, cast, direction and background music. Ik Sandhu Hunda Si is high on entertainment and nowhere does it make you feel uncomfortable with excessive action, blood, gore or violence.

The film starts with a grand entry of Gippy Grewal in full action mode. The story of three friends who risk their lives for each other is extremely relatable to all those who are in college or have spent time there amongst close friends. The film moves towards romance with the introduction of Neha Sharma but the writers make sure that none of the emotions (love, friendship, comedy, action) go overboard. It’s hard to keep a mix of everything but the writers cleverly integrate sequences of each in the screenplay. But it’s the undercurrent of friendship that wins the hearts.

From friendship and love, the film turns in to a revenge saga in the initial reels of the second half. The action sequence where Gippy beats up Vikramjeet Virk invites seetis and taalis from the public. It’s after a long time that the Punjabi audience has enjoyed the hero beating up the assailants. The last fight during the culmination is also the highpoint of the movie.

Gippy Grewal plays a character that has a larger-than-life image. He enacts with full conviction when he romances the girl, stands by his friends and even beats up the goons. Neha Sharma is the surprise package of the film. She matches Gippy shoulder to shoulder in terms of performance. She should be seen more often in Punjabi films. Roshan Prince and Dheeraj Kumar are first-rate. Pawan Malhotra is decent. Director Rakesh Mehta, writers Jass Grewal and Prince Kanwaljit Singh, action director Sham Kaushal and background music director Amar Mohile together make it a must-watch film.

What Could’ve Been Better:

A film like Ik Sandhu Hunda Si deserves one blockbuster song. The music of the film is average and makes you itch for that one track that you take home with you after the film has ended.

Why You Should Watch:

Ik Sandhu Hunda Si is a well-made action drama that should be your first choice to watch this week. The film is an action-packed thriller that would be appreciated by people of all age groups. Gippy Grewal is in full form as Sandhu and is equally well supported by Neha Sharma, Roshan Prince and Dheeraj Kumar.
