Kaake Da Viyah: Film Review – A Whirlwind Wedding

Verdict: Jordan Sandhu’s acting debut is an absolute entertainer.

Kaake Da Viyah is a special film, primarily because it marks the acting debut of singer Jordan Sandhu and also the comeback of yesteryear’s superstar of Punjabi cinema, Preeti Sapru. The movie’s trailer hints of a tussle between Jordan’s mother and grandmother, wherein both want him to get married to the girls recommended by each of them, while Jordan is in love with someone else. An interesting concept, but does it translate into entertaining cinema? Let’s analyze.

What’s Kaake Da Viyah About:

Jordan’s family wants him to get married but it is harder than it seems. On one hand, his grandmother wants him to get married to a girl of her choice, and on the other, his mother is eager to select a girl for him. On top of that, he is already in love with the girl of his dreams. His dilemma of being stuck between the three women forms the crux of the story.

What Works:

Kaake Da Viyah wastes no time and comes directly to the point right in the first few reels. It is quite evident that Jordan’s grandmother and mother do not share a healthy relationship and each one considers the other to be the controller of the house. Then comes the biggest decision – the girl Jordan would marry.

The first half has two parallel strylines with the ladies finding girls for Jordan on one hand and Jordan own love story on the other. To add some masala, actors like Harby Sangha, Karamjit Anmol and Gurmeet Sajan are introduced, who have their own wars to fight amongst themselves. The interval sees Jordan being engaged to two girls and in love with a third.

The story takes a turn in the second half when Jordan’s girlfriend decides to come and stay at his house. The confusion thereon is interesting and entertaining with the viewers anticipating what to expect next. The car navigation scene towards the climax brings the house down.

Jordan Sandhu makes a confident debut. He looks fabulous on screen and his fan following is sure to multiply after this movie. Given the right characterization, the young Sardarji is sure to be the next big thing of Pollywood. Prabh Grewal does a decent job next to him. She throws in a confident performance, especially in scenes with other senior actors. Harby Sangha is the mainstay of the movie. He gets the maximum screentime and it’s a yet another thumbs up performance by him. Nirmal Rishi and Preeti Sapru manage to keep a smile on the viewers’ faces throughout the movie. Karamjit Anmol and Gurmeet Saajan are first-rate. Rai Yuvraj Bains’ direction is decent.

What could’ve been better:

The placement of songs in the film seems forced. The dialogues aren’t as funny as you’d expected and the humor factor completely relies on the performances of the actors.

Why You should watch:

Kaake Da Viyah can be watched for the superlative performances of Harby Sangha, Nirmal Rishi and Preeti Sapru. Jordan Sandhu’s debut as an actor is something that Punjabi film audiences should not miss.
