Kala Shah Kala: Film Review – When in Love, Color Doesn’t Matter

Verdict: Sargun Mehta shines in a film that should’ve belonged to Binnu Dhillon.

One of the most awaited films of 2019, the Binnu Dhillon, Sargun Mehta and Jordan Sandhu starrer Kala Shah Kala is out. Besides having big names, the film’s trailer was hilarious and the curiosity to watch the movie increased manifolds. A good-looking girl forcefully married to an ugly-looking boy is a premise both relatable as well as done to death. Does the team of Kala Shah Kala manage to entertain the audience? Let’s analyze.

What’s Kala Shah Kala About:

Lovely (Binnu Dhillon) is a happy-go-lucky and charming guy who is struggling to find love because of his dark complexion. Pammi (Sargun Mehta) is everything he dreamt of and for a while, it sure seems like a match made in heaven. But Pammi is in love with Jaggi (Jordan Sandhu). Lovely will have to prove yet again that it’s not the colour of the skin that matters but your heart and soul that wins the heart.

What Works:

Kala Shah Kala has two ironical halves. The first hour has joyful situations, dialogues that bring the house down, and jokes that are targeted at skin color. On the other hand, the second half is full of drama and romance with a love triangle taking over the proceedings.

The movie starts on a high with Binnu’s friends maligning him due to his skin colour. The dialogues are hilarious and the proceedings are thoroughly enjoyable. Karamjit Anmol and Harby Sangha’s comic one-liners on Binnu’s dark complexion are the high points of the film. The sequences involving Binnu and Sargun’s parents meeting each other to Daadi playing the spoilsport in Sargun’s plans, and Sargun trying to run away with Jordan are all entertaining, enjoyable and engaging. The finale is full-on filmi with drama at a railway station.

Binnu Dhillon is in full form when he gets roles that include loud comedy. But in Kala Shah Kala he gets to play the underdog who is a soft, subtle, and romantic boy. Sargun Mehta is the heart and soul of the movie. She delivers a top-notch performance and is perfect as Pammi. Jordan Sandhu impresses in a short but important role. Karamjit Anmol and Harby Sangha are delightful to watch. Nirmal Rishi is first-rate and Shehnaz Gill makes an impact.

Director Amarjit Singh’s work shows that he knows the craft well. He has a flair for comedy and is most comfortable during the first hour of Kala Shah Kala.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The incidents where Binnu tries to woo Sargun as well as the ending should’ve been a bit more thought of. Moreover, the finale is quite predictable.

Why You Should Watch:

Watch Kala Shah Kala for the sincere effort put in by the cast of the film, especially Sargun. The movie has an interesting storyline and a hilarious first half. Kala Shah Kala also teaches that if the heart is made of gold, then true love doesn’t care about color or complexion of the skin.
