Sufna: Film Review – The Perfect Valentine’s Treat

Verdict: Ammy Virk and Tania give splendid performances in this love saga.

Generally, all Punjabi films are categorized as ‘comedy’ or ‘action’ or ‘romance’ or anything that has to do with the era gone by. But seldom does a film come that makes you laugh, cry and fall in love within those two hours. Jagdeep Sidhu’s Sufna is one of those films. With an odd pairing (Ammy Virk and Tania) that works wonderfully, the mesmerizing music of Jaani and B Praak and the unmatchable writing and direction of Jagdeep Sidhu, this movie is the perfect gift for your Valentine.

What’s Sufna About:

Jagjeet Singh (Ammy Virk) and his set of friends are attracted to Teg (Tania), a young girl from a neighboring village who works in the fields. Teg is an orphan who has been raised by her uncle and aunt. She identifies Jagjeet as the only one who has true feelings for her and reciprocates his love. But their love goes through many hurdles before they become one.

What Works:

Sufna is a perfectly written movie wherein the writer wants to throw every emotion in the narrative. And the result is a beautiful love story of Jeet and Teg.

Sufna starts off like most Punjabi films as the emphasis is on comedy. The characters succeed in bringing out guffaws from the audiences. The random tease between friends, the strategies they make to impress Teg, and the undercurrent of love between Jeet and Teg are the high points of this half.

The second hour is where the seriousness creeps in. As soon as Teg narrates her history to Jeet, comedy takes a back seat. Jeet and Teg’s love story is made to test the waters. We see love, care, closeness, and separation within in one hour. But all’s well that ends well. Thankfully Jagdeep Sidhu does not make the audience leave moist-eyed out of cinema halls like he did in Qismat.

Ammy Virk is in full form. His Midas touch was missing in Nikka Zaildar 3, but with Sufna, he makes sure that his fans are left happy. He plays a subdued village boy who is aimless in life and suddenly changes when his love explains to him the importance of being successful. Tania is a revelation. She is the star of Sufna. The petite girl delivers her career-best performance and proves her worth amongst seasoned actors. Jagjeet Sandhu provides comic relief.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The actual story of the film begins in the second half. The first half is engaging, but as far as the story is concerned, the only thing happening on screen is the boys trying to woo Teg.

Why You Should Watch:

Sufna is the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your lover that comes with a sweet love story narrated in the simplest manner and portrayed by supremely talented Ammy Virk and Tania.
