Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raniyum: Film Review – A Modern Romance

Verdict: A portrayal of a violent and yet an endearing love story.

Directed by Ranjit Jeyakodi and produced by Balaji Kapa under the banner Madhav Media, Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raniyum is a love story between two youngsters who are quite different from each other. The film stars Harish Kalyan and Shilpa Manjunath in the lead supported by Ma Ka Pa Anand, Bala Saravanan, and Ponvannan. Sam CS has composed music while A Kavin Raj has handled cinematography.

What’s Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raniyum About:

Gautham (Harish Kalyan) is a middle-class boy with major anger issues. His troubled childhood haunts him too often but his father (Ponvannan) and friends (Bala Saravanan and Ma Ka Pa Anand) support him through the ups and downs. During a party, Gautham meets Tara (Shilpa Manjunath) in a rather unexpected event leading them to bump into each other quite often. Well aware of his past and troublesome behavior, Tara accepts Gautham the way he is and soon both of them fall deeply in love with each other. However, Tara finds it difficult to convince her rich parents and her fiancé and asks Gautham for time. His insecurity and fear of losing her make the couple go through difficult times despite Tara’s efforts. This leads to further troubles in their lives. The rest of the movie is about whether they handle the turmoil or part ways.

What Works:

Firstly, applause to Harish Kalyan for doing a fantastic job. This would probably be one of his best performances till date. He has managed to pull off the role of a troubled young man with a violent streak quite well. Shilpa Manjunath is a treat to watch. She delivers a fantastic performance without giving the impression that she is a newcomer. Bala Saravanan and Anand manage to make the audience laugh with their humor. Kavin Raj‘s cinematography is excellent. He has captured all the sequences quite well, especially the close-ups and scenic shots. Sam’s music is quite refreshing and beautiful. The action sequences are well choreographed too. The director has cleverly and pleasantly broken away from many clichés –the lead female here is not just eye candy; she is a decision maker, bold, practical and does not simply give in to the hero’s tantrums. The movie ends with a good message about self-realization and acceptance and that’s beautiful to watch. It also has a point that true love never gets out of trend.

What Could Have Been Better:

While the first half is apt, the latter half seems slow-paced and stretched and a few scenes and songs could well have been avoided. Though similarities with Arjun Reddy cannot be unseen, it holds its ground and makes for an entertaining watch.

Why You Should Watch:

Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raniyum is a beautiful love story anyone would love to watch, where the lead actors have given good performances. In all, the film will keep you entertained so book your tickets now to witness a true new-gen love story.
