Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum: Film Review – A Breezy Rom-Com

Verdict: This season's sweetest love story!

Nalan Kumarasamy's debut film Soodhu Kavvum was raved by all due to the humor content and the unusual story. A dark crime-comedy, Soodhu Kavvum made Kumarasamy one of the most promising filmmakers to watch out for. He's back with his second film – Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum. Just like his first film, the film's strength lies in the sharp writing loaded with comedy.

The official remake of the Korean film, My Dear Desperado, this film follows the lives of an unlikely couple who meet and fall in love. An ex-convict Kathir (Vijay Sethupathi)  and an IT professional, Yazhini (Madonna Sebastin) are next-door-neighbors. They do not particularly begin on a great note when they first meet but a series of events eventually leads to a special relationship between both.

Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum isn't your typical rom-com. Several cliches are carefully avoided. There isn't any romantic duet numbers, neither is there any boy-chasing-girl sequence. That is exactly what makes this film stand out. All credits to the strong and crisp writing that allow the viewer to sink into the story. The audience is also treated to an interesting subplot that is heavy on action.

The first half of the film sails smoothly. The comic sequences, the cute sequences featuring Kathir and Yazhini make it a fun watch. The second half is where the film introduces twists. The film doesn't waste time focusing on back stories of the characters with an elaborate flashback, and settles for a brief introduction.

The film's film proves why Vijay Sethupathi is a versatile actor. He fits into any role perfectly. His character's sweet and adorable nature isn't that of a typical goon, and that makes one like him even more. Madonna Sebastin makes a striking debut. The casting in the film makes it tick. Their characterizations might seem a tad fairy tale-ish, but it adds the much needed magical element to the film. Samuthirakani makes a brief yet noteworthy performance.

Why You Should Watch This Film

Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is the perfect rom-com of this season. The electrifying chemistry between the lead couple will instantly make one like them. This film is sure to put a smile on faces. Don't miss it!
