Kathanayagan: Film Review – Tha. Muruganantham’s Debut Gives us a Box of Laughter.

Verdict: Vishnu and Soori's bond redefines and sets the bar way up in terms of friendship.

Kathanayagan, a brand new Tamil movie directed by the debutant Tha. Muruganantham, is a complete family entertainer. The movie is a perfect amalgam of action, drama and drama and is of sure to give you a hearty laugh throughout. It has Vishnu and Catherine Tresa playing the lead roles and comedian Soori as the hero's best friend.

Thambidurai (Vishnu) is a government employee who is a little timid in nature who falls in love with Kanmani (Catherine Tresa). He becomes distressed when Kanmani’s father does not approve of their relationship as he does not qualify the father's expectations of a son-in-law. The series of comical mistakes begin to occur when he decides to fight a goon in the bar because that somehow translates to being brave. Post the fight, he ends up in a hospital with Annadurai (Soori) where they misdiagnose him with an acute illness. Around the same time, his family is in need of cash for Thambi’s sister’s wedding, so he decides to sell his kidney to a Sheikh from Dubai (Anandaraj) in exchange for Rs. 5 million. Things get messy and hilarious when Thambi learns about his misdiagnosis from Dr. Phoenix Raj, played by Vijay Sethupathi. The movie also has Motta Rajendran making a guest appearance and Saranya playing the role of Thambi’s mother.

The bond shared between Thambi and Anna steals the spotlight and sets new bars for on-screen friendship. The movie is sure to become a commercial hit, thanks to its ridiculously riotous story.
Although it is a fun entertainer movie, the story slacks in solid content which is somehow compensated by comedy. Watch out for the the fight scene towards the end of the movie; it was the most hilarious one of all. The songs are quite catchy. They are offbeat and not easy to forget, which is commendable these days.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
The script is quite hilarious. If you are looking for a light movie to end your week with, this is your reeled entertainer. Watch out for Vijay Sethupathi’s guest appearance as a part time truth-seeking human. Watch the movie for the bond shared between Soori and Vishnu as it is truly one of a kind.
