Should You Watch The Tamil Horror-Thriller ‘Lift’?

Directed by debutant filmmaker Vineeth Varaprasad, Lift is a horror-thriller. Guru (Kavin) is a dedicated IT professional who gets transferred to the Chennai branch of his company. Here, he meets Harini (Amritha Aiyer). The two share a past connection that ended on an unhappy note. One day, Guru stays overtime at the office. Paranormal activities begin to occur, especially in the lift, and he finds he’s trapped in the building. Later he finds Harini, who is also stuck on the same floor. How the duo solves the mystery is the crux of the story.

A promising story…

Vineeth Varaprasad’s movie is a refreshing attempt in the horror genre. The director and his team deserve credit for creating a film that majorly revolves around just a lift and two characters. The horror elements are gripping enough to keep you at the edge of your seat. There is also a very interesting backstory to the events of the film.

But it could have been better

The film’s major flaw is that it takes too long to get down to the centre of the plot. It depends on jump scares and shocking moments to keep you hooked. But the story remains under-developed. The backstory, though deeply moving, arrives too late to make sufficient impact.

‘Lift’ is a well-made horror thriller that’s worth watching once.
