Pattas: Film Review – A Firecracker, Indeed!

Verdict: Pattas entertains you with good performances and an engaging plot.

Directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar, Pattas is his second outing with Dhanush after the blockbuster Kodi. The film also features Sneha, Mehreen Pirzada, Naveen Chandra, Munishkanth Ramdoss and Nassar in pivotal roles. It is produced by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan under the banner Sathya Jyothi Films and has Om Prakash handling cinematography and Vivek-Mervin composing the music. Pattas discusses Adimurai – an ancient martial art practiced by the Cholas.

What’s Pattas About:

Pattas (Dhanush) is a happy-go-lucky guy living off petty thievery. As playful revenge on his neighbor Sadhana (Mehreen Pirzada), he and his sidekick Puncture (KPY Sathish) rob a Mixed Martial Arts Academy, where she works. The academy is run by kickboxing champion Nilan (Naveen Chandra), a very influential and not-so-innocent man. Meanwhile, he also stumbles upon Kanya Kumari (Sneha), who happens to be his long-lost mother. From her, Pattas gets to know about his father Thiraviyam Perumal (Dhanush again) and the family’s history with Nilan. How Pattas redeems himself and fulfills his mother’s wish to avenge his father’s death becomes the crux of the movie.

What Works:

Dhanush shines both as Pattas the Thief and Thiraviyam the Adimurai Artist. In fact, both the characters are poles apart and Dhanush has enacted them without letting the shade of one fall on the other, which is an extraordinary feat most actors cannot achieve. Sneha gets a meaty role and her performance is applaudable. It is refreshing to watch a female actor performing martial arts and delivering a very matured performance. Vivek-Mervin‘s songs are decent but their background score stands out, gelling well with the scenes. Om Prakash‘s camera work is notable. The martial arts performances by the lead actors are nearly perfect while the action scenes deserve a round of applause. Durai Senthilkumar delivers a good story as Pattas surely entertains.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The major letdown of the film is that it’s quite predictable. Be it the flashback or the climax, you know what exactly is going to happen and the director could have included a few surprise elements here. Mehreen Pirzada sadly is a misfit and Naveen Chandra is not very impressive as the antagonist. The VFX could have been better as well. The film also lags in the second half.

Why You Should Watch:

Adimurai is an ancient martial art we may not have even heard of and the director has made sure that we wouldn’t forget it after watching this film. Pattas delivers some solid performances and beautifully set action scenes, which are sure to keep you glued throughout the film. It is a good entertainer and watchable with family and friends, so go book your tickets now.
