Petta: Film Review – Thalaiva Strikes Hard With This Mass Entertainer

Verdict: Rajnikanth proves yet again that he’s the No. 1 superstar.

Petta, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is a character-driven film with Thalaivar as the lead. It’s an out-and-out mass entertainer where Rajinikanth steals the show, supported by a stellar cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Simran Bagga, Trisha Krishnan, Sananth Reddy, M. Sasikumar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bobby Simha, Megha Akash, Malavika Mohanan, J. Mahendran and many others. Petta is written by the director himself – a self-confessed Thalaiva fan – and he has done complete justice to the superstar and his fans with an amazingly entertaining movie with all the Thalaivar elements in place.

What’s Petta About:

A new warden Kaali (Rajinikanth) joins a men’s college hostel and makes a lot of positive changes, earning the love and appreciation of his students. Anwar (Sananth Reddy) enrolls in college to be with his girlfriend Anu (Megha Akash) but the college baddie Michael (Bobby Simha) has the hots for her. Everytime Anwar gets into trouble, Kaali comes to his rescue, which leads to a confrontation between him and Michael’s father – a local businessman and goon. Meanwhile, Kaali forms a bond with Anu’s single mother Mangalam (Simran Bagga). In an attempt by Michael’s gang to attack Kaali and Anwar, another gang comes into the picture, eventually leading Kaali to face the politician Singaa (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his son Jithu (Vijay Sethupathi). It is revealed that all three of them are connected from the past, revealing Kaali’s real story and the reason behind his stay in the hostel.

What Works:

It’s been more than a decade since we saw Rajinikanth do a playful, energetic, and fun act on screen and Karthik Subbaraj has made it possible again. Unlike his other movies, which focus on narration and plot, Karthik is all in for the Rajinism in Petta, making it a celebration of the superstar. Rajini is a treat to watch on screen, as always. The other actors have done their parts well too and nobody disappoints you. Simran’s charm cannot be ignored either. Karthik has also made sure that the technical side is top-notch, all thanks to Tirru and Vivek Harshan who have handled the cinematography and editing amazingly well with their immense effort. The locations and color tones are beautiful and they have only added more charm to the entire movie. Anirudh’s music and BGM go brilliantly well with the theme.

What Could’ve Been Better:

Generally, Karthik Subbaraj gives immense importance to his female characters but that is lacking in Petta. You also don’t find a strong antagonist regardless of having phenomenal actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vijay Sethupathi. Makkal Selvan‘s character, in fact, only contributes to the obvious twist, which may dismay some of his fans. The movie also feels a tad dragged towards the end. However, all of these inconsistencies get masked by the Thalaivar magic.

Why You Should Watch:

Petta is for all the Rajini fans who have loved him in Baashha, Padayappa, or Annamalai. It’s a power-packed entertainer made to entertain all kinds of movie fans. Go book your tickets now and make this Pongal even more colorful and exciting!
