Raag-The Rhythm of Love: Film Review

We are busy. We are working. We are stuck in traffic. We are stuck in meetings…

In this fast-paced city life, where coffee table discussions and pillow talks are replaced by Instant messaging, does true love or marriage exist? Forget existence, do we have the patience or the time to deal with a real relationship? Answers will vary.

Rajni Basumatary’sRaag: The Rhythm of love‘, questions the conscience. What keeps a marriage alive? Is it love, compatibility or just the need of companionship?

Radhika (Zerifa Wahid) is married to Alok (Kenny Basumatary), a corporate executive. Radhika is a lonely housewife. Alok cannot be categorized as a bad husband. But somehow, he fails to understand Radhika. Ignored by her husband, Radhika develops a special bond with an artist – Iqbal (Adil Hussain). Iqbal is a loner. Separated from his wife for over 12 years, Iqbal stays aloof, and often is lost in his own world. With time, their relationship bloomed. A fleeting moment or two people escaping from their mundane lives? A situation, a lot of us have been through.

Relationships are complicated. And even more complex is the bond of marriage. Rajni Basumatary is efficacious in presenting the whole idea of relationship in her movie. A wife’s unspoken desires in a relationship, a husband’s boorish attitude and a lonely man’s hope. The characters are sublime. Zerifa Wahid as Radhika is exquisite. It definitely wasn’t one of her best roles, but one cannot deny the grace of it all! The intensity of the character is perfectly presented by Zerifa. Adil Hussain, who played the role of Iqbal, is rustic yet charming, as usual. The earthiness of his acting gave the movie a very nice touch. Kenny Basumatary, who charmed the audience with his last movie Local Kung Fu, did a commendable job. Also, popular Assamese actor- Kapil Bora did a special guest appearance as Partho. But, undoubtedly, it is Zerifa Wahid and Adil Hussain that made ‘Raag’ a pleasurable watch.

The music of the film is composed by Avinash Baghel. The tracks ‘Akou Ebar‘ and ‘Tup Tup Xore Andhar‘ are beautifully-composed and sung. Overall, the music is calming, melodic and in perfect sync with the movie. Ajayan Vincent, who did the cinematography, perfectly captured the characters. Altogether, ‘Raag: The Rhythm of love‘ is a seasoned Assamese film.

Why watch the film?
In recent times, when the Assamese film industry is dwindling, films like ‘Raag: The Rhythm of love‘ is a ray of hope. It is fresh and bold. Rajni Basumatary took on a subject which in one way or another will compel us to question the value of a relationship. Watch the movie for its utterly-realistic characters and story plot.
