Thaanaa Serndha Koottam: Film Review -A Series of Heists That’ll Leave you Awestruck

Verdict: Suriya delivers an A-1 performance in this complete masaledaar package.

Based on the true story of the infamous 1987 Opera House heist, where the TBZ jewellers were robbed of approximately 3.5 million worth of jewellery, writer and director Vignesh ShivN brings to the big screen, an action-packed, colourful dance numbered and factful film starring the oh-so-awesome Suriya and Keerthy Suresh to give you a fun and informative ride.

What's Thaanaa Serndha Koottam about?

The film is based on the Opera House heist of 1987 and shares almost the same storyline as Akshay Kumar's film Special 26. It is about a group of 5 people who are suppressed by the government officials in matters of corruption and decide to take justice into their own hands. When Uthaman (played by Suresh Menon), a corrupt CBI officer, shatters Iniyan's (played by Suriya) dream of becoming a CBI officer, he puts together a team of five along with Azaghameena (played by Ramya Krishnan), and characters played by Senthil, Sathyan and Shivashankar and swindle rich businessmen and politicians.  They initially pull off heists robbing corrupt politicians and eventually go on to the biggest prize of them all, robbing GR Jewellers. Iniyan, during one of the heists, meets a girl who is also fraudster (played by Keerthy Suresh) and they fall in love. Sub Inspector Vetravil (played by Nandha Durairaj) also delivers a great performance.

What works?

Carefully adapted with additions and dilutions accordingly, the film has conjured a remarkable justification to the original story. The music composed by Anirudh was absolutely jhakaas and the dance routines were extremely colorful and totally masaledaar. Great songs with great dance make you want to jump off your seat and dance as well.  The charming Suriya was at his best in the film delivering semma dialogues. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is a perfect Pongal entertainer.

What could have been better?

The film had too many abrupt jumps into the storyline making it hard to follow in some instances. The continuity of the storyline felt haywire.

Why you should watch this film:

The film is a great watch for a family outing and is an incredibly fun watch for everyone! We suggest you take your family and friends and go watch this one for the simply awesome and charming Suriya!

Priyadarshan’s 2007 horror-comedy ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ is easily one of our favourite Bollywood movies. Stellar performances, a fantastic storyline, the foot-tapping title track and the ghostly entity Manjulika render it a must-watch. Anees Bazmee’s standalone sequel smartly lifts the elements that made the OG movie work, but give us entirely new characters and plot.

When Priyadarshan’s horror-comedy ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ released in 2007, it delighted both critics and the public. A remake of the 1993 Malayalam movie ‘Manichitrathazu’, the Hindi film features Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja. A solid storyline backed by crackling performances (especially Kumar and Balan), foot-tapping music, peak comedy interspersed with supernatural thrills, a surprising psychological twist, and a legendary spectral entity in the form of Manjulika made it an absolute must-watch.
