Dorasaani: Film Review – An Authentic Feel Good Love Story

Verdict: The debutantes shine brightly in this romantic saga set in a village.

Dorasaani marks the debut for writer-director KVR Mahendra and the lead pair, Anand Devarakonda and Shivatmika Rajasekhar. Also, as many as 67 actors are believed to have made their debut with this movie. Dorasaani hit the buzz instantly when it was announced as it happened to be the launch pad for the sensational lead actors, Vijay Devarakonda’s brother and Dr. Rajasekhar’s daughter.

What’s Dorasaani About:

Dorasaani opens with the release of a Naxalite named Kishore from the Central Jail. As he starts searching for his friend, Raju (Anand Devarakonda), he starts narrating his story in the process. The movie goes back 30 years where Raju is introduced as a student, who is the son of a laborer and comes to his native village for the holidays. Devaki (Shivatmika Rajasekhar) is the daughter of the village head and is fondly known as Chinna Dorasaani. They catch each other’s attention at a village festival and gradually their love blossoms. As expected, the much-in-love duo faces hurdles while convincing their parents for their alliance and finally elope with the help of Devaki’s brother. To know how their story culminates, one has to watch Dorasaani.

What Works:

The best part of Dorasaani is the realistic treatment given to the narrative. The period village set up is has been crafted well and seems so genuine that you get instantly connected with the characters despite the fresh and unknown faces. Anand and Shivatmika get into the skins of their characters and they will probably be addressed by their screen names than their original names for a long time to come. The first-time director KVR Mahendra does a great job at getting the nuanced story-telling right. Right from the start till the end, it is pure love story between Raju and Dorasaani. Sunny Kurapati’s camera work is exemplary and the visual take the audience straight to the 80’s. Prashanth R Vihari’s music and background score put the soul in this love story. Navin Nooli’s editing could not get better than this. Last but not least, the production values are exuberant.

What Could Have Been Better:

Though Dorasaani is a well-made love story, the story seems a little predictable and the pace seems a bit slow in places. Nevertheless, Dorasaani keeps you hooked.

Why You Should Watch:

Though Dorasaani falls in the same league of poor-boy-rich-girl love stories that we’ve seen in the past, it has its soul in the right place and that is what makes it different. Every actor has lived with their character and they are genuinely convincing. Watch Dorasaani and you will not be disappointed for sure.
