R J Balaji’s directorial debut Mookuthi Amman featuring lady superstar Nayanthara made a sparkling Diwali release on Disney Hotstar. Since its premiere online, the film has garnered unprecedented views and tons of appreciation for its entertaining and lighthearted take on the very relevant topic of faith. Viewers across the board were highly impressed with the film especially due to its relatability with the common man and here’s how the film achieved this.
Keep it simple
Any message or thought could be driven home if it is broken down in an understandable manner and that’s exactly what Balaji did with Mookuthi Amman. Taking on outwardly heavy topics of devotion to God, superstitious beliefs and the lure of false hysteria towards Godmen, the director shapes these issues in a package of simple humour and lighthearted expressions that worked wonders in getting the point across. As a result, viewers spanning all cross-sections of the society were able to relate in their own way through their personal experiences with these topics.
God is accessible to all
Don’t we all harbour the desire to see our fervent prayers answered and for God to grace us personally with His/Her presence and fulfil our dreams? Balaji plays to this sentiment exactly in his portrayal of Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman. It, therefore, instils a feeling that everyone whoever they are in society, is worthy of receiving the Almighty’s enlightenment. Through the easy banter between both characters,God and human,we also feel that God is indeed as mortal as any of us and that accessibility is heartwarming to note.
Take it back to the rural milieu
In our country, faith and its different forms are mainly witnessed in our villages which make up a huge part of the nation’s landscape. By setting the story in the deep South of beautiful Nagercoil, the director targets a specific audience who can relate to many of the issues tackled in the screenplay. Further, Mookuthi Amman and other similar Hindu deities are worshipped and revered with sincere devotion mostly in these rustic setups and a film based on one of these deities is sure to create a deep impact in the minds of the village folk and it did, with great success.
