Actor Kangana Ranaut made her debut in Bollywood with the 2006 hit Gangster and has since essayed many unconventional roles of powerful and courageous women on screen. Her first entry into the Tamil industry is unsurprisingly the much-awaited Thalaivi directed by Vijay, based on the life of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalitha. Here’s the trailer if you haven’t already watched it.

Kangana Ranaut makes for a great choice to play Thalaivi and here’s why.
Two empowered women – one film
It is no mystery that Kangana’s performances in reel life are in fact an extension of who she is in real life—a daring woman who is never at a loss to speak her mind on any matter, whether it is politics, nepotism in Bollywood, social causes and the like! Similarly, Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late J Jayalalitha was a powerhouse of talent who was one of the first women to have entered into the highly male-dominated territory of Tamil Nadu politics. Sent to act at age 16, Jayalalitha conquered the Tamil film world and then proceeded to carve a niche for herself in the political arena with her grit, determination and iron will to succeed and served as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for 6 terms. Who better than one powerful woman to depict the life of another equally impressive woman on screen!
A daring transformation
Kangana Ranaut as we all know is a perfectionist in her craft and is someone who is willing to go the extra mile to lend authenticity to a role. If that means putting on loads of weight, then so be it! The actor had gained 20 to 25 kilos for the physical appearance of the protagonist and perfected all the mannerisms as well. Expectedly the first look poster featuring Kangana as Jayalalitha sent a ripple through social media. Jayalalitha too was known to be an actor who was extremely dedicated to her craft and later a no-nonsense politician who ruled the roost for an unprecedented amount of time. It is only fitting that someone like Kangana embodies these qualities.
Humble beginnings and intriguing lives
It is no secret that while Kangana enjoys immense popularity for her prowess, she is also subject to mass trolling for being the instigator of many controversies in the film industry and outside of it. While many question her motives and actions, she is strong enough to stand by what she believes in and takes pride in her humble Himachal roots. Similar to her, J Jayalalitha is a self-made woman from a modest background in Mandya who worked her way up to success. A forthright woman who was ruthless at times and always spoke her mind, she too faced a negative backlash from the public and other politicians but stood her ground.
And there’s more to the story…
Thalaivi is already one of the most anticipated films for all the reasons above. In case you still aren’t convinced about watching it, think again as a star-studded cast has been roped in by the director Vijay to enhance the hype even further. Veteran actors Prakash Raj and Aravind Swamy will play the roles of former Chief Ministers and political giants M Karunanidhi and M G Ramachandran on screen. In addition, the film also has Bollywood actress Bhagyashree and filmmaker and actor Samuthirakani in significant roles, supported by Poorna and Madhu. Trending composer G V Prakash Kumar has tuned the melodies and the first single rendered by Vidya Vox titled “ Thalaivi” is already a crowd favorite. While we are still awaiting further announcements on the premiere of the film, keep watching this space for in-depth updates.
