Market Raja MBBS: Film Review – A Ho-Hum Spin-off

Writer-director Saran who is credited with commercially successful entertainers like Gemini Vasool Raja MBBS and Muni takes on the task of rehashing the plots from these films to give us Market Raja MBBS. The story revolves around Marketraja (Arav) a don who cares little for anything except power and money. When he brings down an enemy of a corrupt minister Radha (Sayaji Shinde) the cops rope in an encounter specialist from the north (Pradeep Rawat) to eliminate him. Unfortunately, the operation goes awry and results in the death of a timid medical student Chandrababu (Vihaan). His spirit, in turn, enters Marketraja who suddenly becomes meek and mild.

An interesting premise executed imperfectly

Spoofing on elements from existing well-known films isn’t an old premise and has been done successfully as well. Director Saran introduces some interesting twists using characters from his previous films. In Vasool Raja, a don impersonates a doctor while here, a doctor or his spirit ( a reference to the film Muni) behaves like a don. This could have been entertaining if the writing had been tighter and more competent. As a result, we get a melange of many ideas that are packed into the script and serve to confuse rather than illuminate. There are also one too many stereotypes involving women, their appearance and their reactions in situations that feel archaic and don’t really sit well with the viewers.

The ensemble struggles in places

Arav in his debut is given a rather meaty role to sink his teeth into. But his inexperience shows as he is unable to rise up to the occasion with an amateur performance. The supporting team is well cast but are moderate at best. The film is also unnecessarily lengthy at over 2.5 hours and this deters any hope of it achieving a logical conclusion. A half an hour reduction in time would have been highly beneficial.

Market Raja MBBS has the elements that could have made it a decent entertainer but is let down by a poor screenplay and an illogical progression of ideas. Watch it if you like spin-offs or spoofs but prepare to be disappointed if it doesn’t match up to the film references mentioned.
