Filmmaker Mani Ratnam has always been known to tackle complex and grandiose subjects in addition to his family-oriented dramas. The director has taken his vision to a whole new level with the adaptation of the historic magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan written by renowned author Kalki Krishnamoorthy. Said to be filmed in two parts, Ponniyin Selvan was originally expected to hit cinemas in early 2021 but the advent of Covid-19 had put a stop to all shooting schedules. Netizens and fans will be delighted to know that filming will recommence post-Diwali in mid-November in Hyderabad as per reports. This is a film that is extremely elaborate in scale and story and is probably if not the most ambitious Tamil project to be created. It is produced by Mani Ratnam’s own Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

An envious star cast will boost this narrative
Ponniyin Selvan is a sweeping narrative that traces the historic Chola empire and its powerful reign over South India. There are complex stories within stories that are woven in with expertise by the author who gives us a detailed insight into one of the greatest dynasties of the country. There are also innumerable characters who shape this narrative. It is then no mean feat to create this world on screen and Manirathnam has roped in the who’s who of the Indian film world to enhance this epic tale. The star-studded star cast of Ponniyin Selvan include Karthi, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Trisha to name just a few! To add more hype if that’s even possible, music maestro A R Rahman will tune the melodies and ace cinematographer Ravi Varman will be in charge behind the camera. With Manirathnam’s penchant for scouting magnificent locales as backdrops, we are expecting nothing less than a visual extravaganza.
Ponniyin Selvan promises to be epic in every way and we can’t wait to experience this on screen. Keep watching this space for all the latest on this film.
