The Hitman’s Bodyguard: Film Review – Packs Punches And Punchlines

Verdict: The stellar cast puts the act in this action comedy.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard brings the dream pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson that works effortlessly well on screen. Ryan Reynolds plays a protection agent, Michael Bryce, who goes from guarding international clients to protecting rich drug addicts when a client dies on his watch.  Samuel L. Jackson plays Darius Kincaid, a hitman who isn’t as bad as you’d think. He might be violent, profane, and prone to taking unnecessary risks, but he’s the yang to the straight man Ryan Reynold’s yin.

The big bad villain is a Belarusian dictator, Vladislav Dukhovich, played by Gary Oldman. Oldman is terrifying in The Hitman’s Bodyguard – he’s cold, cruel, and can order a slaughter on a whim. He’s in front of the International Criminal Court, and it’s only with Darius Kincaid’s testimony that he will be removed from power.

Kincaid is caught by Interpol and he agrees to make a testimony if his wife goes free. French actress Elodie Yung plays the role of Interpol agent, Amelia Rousell, who has to take Kincaid to Amsterdam where the trial is happening. But when they’re attacked, Amelia has to make a decision. The clock is ticking, Dukhovich’s goons are out to kill Kincaid, so she calls up the one person she knows she can trust – her ex, Michael Bryce. Bryce and Kincaid are literal mortal enemies – Kincaid has tried to kill Bryce 28 times, but they manage to put their history aside and work together, eventually.

Salma Hayek, playing Jackson’s wife Sonia Kincaid, dominates every scene she’s in. She almost rivals Samuel L. Jackson in the amount of profanity she uses. She goes from practicing yoga in a Dutch cell with a view to cursing in Spanish at law enforcement officers that try to mess with her.

Surprisingly, it’s not Michael and Amelia that are the lovebirds of The Hitman’s Bodyguard. It’s Kincaid and Sonia that make the perfect couple. They might not have a normal relationship, but they make a steady couple who’s found their groove. Because what’s more proof of true love than nicknaming your significant other ‘The Cockroach’ in Spanish because he’s practically unkillable? But the romance between the two doesn’t come close to the most sizzling chemistry on screen – the one shared by  Reynolds and Jackson.

Ryan Reynolds brings some excellent deadpan snark to compete with Samuel L. Jackson’s cluster f-bombs. They constantly bicker like an old married couple. At one point, they even have a singing duel of sorts, while each tries to drown out the other.

Everything is dialed up to the max. There are bullets flying, cars blowing up, bombs blowing up, and chases on multiple modes of transportation. It might not be realistic, but it’s not trying to be. It stands out from other films of this genre with the superb acting from the main cast. Watching the scenic Amsterdam sequences and just seeing the lead actors play an exaggerated version of themselves alone is worth the price of admission. This is a movie where you get to sit back and just have fun.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is thoroughly entertaining. This is Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson playing their strengths. So if you’re a fan of either, this is a guaranteed blast. Even if you haven’t seen their brand of humor before, it’s still endlessly enjoyable.

Audiences Hail Karnan As A Masterpiece In Tamil Cinema

It’s finally here! ‘Karnan‘ starring Dhanush and directed by Mari Selvaraj has hit the theatres today. Touted to be one of biggest social dramas of the year, the film has been gaining much hype with its poster releases, music videos and the powerful trailer. Karnan also stars Malayalam actor Rajisha Vijaya who makes her Tamil debut with this film, alongside other actors such as Lakshmipriya Chandramouli, Gouri Kishen, Lal, and Yogi Babu in important roles. The cinematography has been handled by Theni Easwaran. Mari Selvaraj gained huge prominence for his grating caste drama ‘Pariyerum Perumal‘ which stunned audiences and critics for its open narration of the horror of the caste divide in society. This time around, the director once again sets the story in the rural milieu with Dhanush playing the titular role and a saviour-like figure of the masses. The audiences have spoken and the reviews are nothing short of stupendous.
