As theatres are reopening across the country, Bollywood is gearing up for a mega release. Theatres in Tamil Nadu have already opened to 100% occupancy and it’s only a matter of time that the other states follow suit. So be prepared for Bollywood to dole out its big-budget releases that we have been waiting for since the beginning of 2020. Among the biggest movies releasing this year, we see a number of biographical dramas that will feature the industry’s biggest actors. From sportspersons to politicians to war veterans and even some ‘baddies’, we’re going to explore the lives of some legendary people through the silver screen. This historical sports film is the story of India’s victory in the men’s Cricket World Cup of 1983. It is centered around Kapil Dev and also features the characters of Sunil Gavaskar, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and others cricketers of that era.
Bhuj: The Pride of India
Director: Abhishek Dudhaiya, Zeel Thacker
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha
This war film is set during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 and revolves around IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, who reconstructed the IAF airbase of Bhuj with the help of 300 women from the local village of Madhapar. The film will release on Disney+ Hotstar.
The Big Bull
Director: Kookie Gulati
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Ileana D’Cruz, Samir Soni
After Scam 1992, we once again get a glimpse at the biggest financial scam in India, orchestrated by stockbroker Harshad Mehta. The film is based on real events between 1990 and 2000 and is expected to release soon on Disney+ Hotstar.

This sports drama is a biopic based on the life and struggles of Mithali Raj, the Indian cricketer and captain of the Indian National Cricket team.

This biographical drama revolves around the revolutionary freedom fighter Udham Singh, whose claim to fame is the assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, who endorsed General Reginald Dyer’s action at the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.

Releasing in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, this political biopic is based on the life of the late Tamil superstar-turned-politician, J. Jayalalithaa. She had served six terms as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

This biographical war action film focusses on the life journey of army captain Vikram Batra. The movie will trace Batra’s actions during the 1999 Kargil War, which awarded him the Param Veer Chakra, India’s highest and most prestigious award for valor.

Based on a chapter of Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, this biopic is based the life of Gangubai Kothewali, a powerful woman in the ’60s, who was also known as the ‘Madam of Kamathipura’ for her connections with the underworld.

Releasing in in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, this sports drama is inspired by the Indian national football team coach and manager Syed Abdul Rahim, who is regarded as the architect of Indian football.

This historical action drama is the biopic of the legendary warrior king Prithviraj Chauhan and captures his early life, military accomplishments, marriage to Sanyukta, and battle with Muhammad of Ghor.
